Starting in May 2024, airfares from Germany will rise significantly. According to Schengenvisainfo, despite the dissatisfaction of the aviation industry, the German government has already made a decision. The new tax rate is expected to be approved by the Bundestag in February.

How the prices will change and which flights are exempt from the tax are described below.

As a reminder, you can buy train, bus, or plane tickets to Ukraine and between cities around the world, as well as view timetables and compare prices through Visit Ukraine's convenient booking service. The website has a bonus points system that allows you to travel much cheaper.

Why is Germany raising airfares?

The government has decided to increase the tax for passengers departing from German airports due to the country's budget deficit of 17 billion euros. As noted, the deficit arose after the German Constitutional Court ruled that the original budget plan was illegal due to the incorrect redistribution of unused COVID funds to the climate change fund.

How much will ticket prices rise from Germany?

The German Federal Ministry of Finance has announced that once the new law comes into force, the tax for those flying from Germany to other countries: in particular, EU member states, accession candidates, EFTA countries and third countries within 2500 km will be 15.53 euros (instead of the current 12.73 euros). Aviation tax for destinations over 6000 km will be increased to EUR 70.83 (instead of the current EUR 58.06).

At the same time, the cost of tickets for children under two years of age who are not assigned a separate seat on the plane will not change. In addition, flights for military or medical purposes are exempt from the fee.
