Polish blockade: how did the government agree with carriers to unblock Ukraine's borders?
Table of contents
The border crossing points between Poland and Ukraine have been unblocked, at least until March 1. Find out what the Polish government agreed with the protesters and whether the Ukrainian border will be blocked again
Today, on January 17, at 13:00, Polish carriers are to fully unblock Ukrainian border crossing points. According to Reuters, this was stated by Tomasz Borkowski of the Committee for the Protection of Polish Carriers and Transport Employers. At the same time, the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine reported that truck traffic was resumed at the Krakivets and Rava-Ruska checkpoints on the evening of January 16.
How the Polish government came to an agreement with the protesters and whether the blockade of Ukraine's borders will continue, we will tell you in the article below.
How did Poland agree with the carriers to stop the blockade?
On January 16, Polish Minister of Infrastructure Dariusz Klimczak and representatives of the protesters gathered for a press conference and signed an agreement to end the blockade of Ukraine's borders.
Thus, Warsaw agreed to make certain compromises in the interests of carriers, but did not specify what concessions were meant, noting that the issues raised were "complex and had been facing us for many years." Instead, the protesters said they would give the government until March 1, 2024. And if by then the government does not provide a solution that suits both sides, they will return to the border blockade.
"This is not the end, but the protest will be suspended. We have agreed on certain conditions, we will give the government time to work, as it is a new government," said Tomasz Borkowski.

At the same time, Rafał Mekler, a leader of the protesters and a member of the Confederation of Freedom and Independence, said that "this is not a surrender, but a strategic pause."
According to the Minister of Infrastructure of Poland, the issues raised concern not only the Ministry of Infrastructure, but also other areas of foreign and domestic policy, and therefore, most likely, the details of the agreements will be known after the negotiations between the parties.
