Today, on January 22, the day of the proclamation of the Act of Unification of the Ukrainian People's Republic and the Western Ukrainian People's Republic in 1919, the country celebrates the Day of Unity of Ukraine, a holiday of national unity. This date has been celebrated annually in Ukraine since 1999.

Why is the Day of Unity of Ukraine a special day for Ukrainians?

For centuries, Ukraine has been forced to fight for its right to exist as an independent state. However, many years of division, genocide, occupation and torture have not suppressed the desire for freedom and the inner drive to fight. And the main meaning of the Day of Unity of Ukraine is not just the desire for independence, but the fact that the East and West of Ukraine are united and always together.

It is also symbolic that the Day of Unity of Ukraine has been repeatedly devalued and abolished. For example, in Soviet times, this day was not celebrated, and in fact, the Soviet authorities tried to destroy any mention of it and emphasized that Unity Day was a "counter-revolutionary holiday." The first official celebration of this date took place on January 22, 1939, in Carpathian Ukraine, which at that time was part of the Czechoslovak Republic. According to the memoirs of writer and journalist Vasyl Hrendzhi-Donsky, it was not just a demonstration, but the largest demonstration of the local population in the 20 years of the region's stay in Czechoslovakia, with the participation of 30,000 people who came to the capital of Carpathian Ukraine from all over the region.

It is also interesting that not only the Soviet rulers tried to cancel the holiday, but also one of the presidents of Ukraine's independence. It was the fugitive president Viktor Yanukovych, who in 2012 canceled the decrees of his predecessors and appointed January 22 as the Day of Unity and Freedom of Ukraine, combining two separate dates of importance to the country into one and thus trying to substitute the concepts. Yanukovych's innovation was abolished by Petro Poroshenko in 2014, who officially restored the name and date of the celebration of the Day of Unity of Ukraine.

Unity is a basic national value of Ukrainians and perhaps the main element of Ukrainian DNA. And today it is not just a state symbol, because at a time when russia is once again trying to divide and destroy Ukraine, unity has once again become a real driving force and weapon in the hands of the Ukrainian people.

And today, everyone should remember that unity is a force that can overcome any obstacles and destroy the insidious plans of the toughest enemy. And unity itself will help Ukrainians preserve their identity and freedom by liberating Ukrainian lands from russian evil spirits.
