Conditions for Ukrainians arriving in Germany
It is known that most immigrants first go to temporary reception centers, which are actually temporary shelters. Then they are distributed to the federal states.
"The housing situation in Germany is very difficult. If you have nowhere to live, you will never be left on the street, but you have to count on many months of living in hangars, dormitories, containers or gyms, not necessarily near a big city,” the volunteers of uahelp.wiki emphasize.
Registration is especially important. Please note that registered refugees will not be accepted elsewhere. They are obliged to reside in the federal state where they were registered or where they were sent.
Moving to another state will require a special permit, which can only be obtained in compelling cases, such as seeking employment or education, moving to join family or because of minor children.
The camp for refugees in Germany and its functioning
Refugees are often resettled in temporary facilities, such as gyms, containers, or dormitories. The location of such facilities may be far from large cities, and the living conditions may be minimal.
Additionally, difficulties with the accommodation of pets should be taken into account, which is why some families face the need to give them for overstaying at their own expense.
For those who are looking for more comfortable conditions for themselves or their pets, other European countries, such as Finland or the Czech Republic, where the rules for accommodation are more flexible, may be better options.
Important! IDP camps are open 24/7.
Which camps are accepting Ukrainian IDPs in February 2025?
Aden-Württemberg - Baden-Württemberg
Baden-Württemberg is one of the most popular reception centers, but you should not expect to stay there at the moment. There are no places for IDPs, so the automated system will distribute you to another region. Most likely, it will be Bavaria, Rhineland-Palatinate or Hesse. The decision on distribution is made for each migrant separately by an automated system.
Since October 2024, there has been an innovation here - the reception center may require that you apply to the city office for admission before registering with them. This may take some time, so we recommend that you take care of your accommodation in advance or plan a route to another region of Germany in case of an unforeseen situation.
1. Karlsruhe
Address: Durlacher Allee 100, 76137 Karlsruhe. Currently open, but distributes to other regions. Since January 2024, it has been accepting everyone who drives their own car. Among the features are the following:
- cars must be parked outside the reception center;
- no animals larger than a cat are allowed.
2. Ellwangen
Address: (Georg-Elser-Str. 2, 73479 Ellwangen). Accepts refugees from Ukraine, but often sends them to other countries.
3. Freiburg
Address: Müllheimer Str. 7, 79115 Freiburg. Open, but often carries out distribution to other federal states. It has the following features:
- does not accept people in need of special medical care;
- accepts small pets that must stay with their owners at all times (dogs must be on a leash).
It is worth noting that you can get to some of the reception points only by your own car. Cars with Ukrainian licence plates can only be driven in Germany for a year after the first arrival in the country. With Visit Ukraine, insurance takes only a few minutes, and the policy itself is sent directly to your email.
