The summer season has begun and many people are already actively choosing a vacation destination. Beach resorts are usually the most popular during this period. However, due to the excessive heat, even the coasts become too hot for a comfortable stay. That is why you should pay attention to the sea resorts that are located to the north and are not yet very popular.

According to Inews, this year the number of bookings at resorts with cooler climates increased by 77% compared to 2023. This indicates that traditionally hot countries such as Spain or Turkey may give way to, for example, Scandinavia.

The publication also made a selection of cool resorts where summer vacations will not be exhausting due to the heat. We invite you to familiarize yourself with the list - further in the article!

Top secret European resorts for summer 2024

Texel Island, the Netherlands

Texel is the largest of the 14 West Frisian Islands in the Watt Sea off the northern coast of the Netherlands. From June to August, the maximum daytime temperature here usually ranges from 18°C to 21°C, although sometimes there can be waves of 30-degree heat.

The main tourist attraction of the island is the nature park, where visitors can take a guided walk along nature trails, book birdwatching excursions and walk along hiking and cycling paths.

St. Martins, United Kingdom

St. Martin's is the third largest island of the Isle of Scilly archipelago off the southwest coast of Britain. It combines cream-colored beaches with interesting attractions such as the SC Dogs distillery and St. Martin's Vineyard, which offers tours and tastings. There are also kayaking trips to the nearby uninhabited island of Tean and underwater tours with the opportunity to swim with seals.

The climate is mild even in winter, and the skies over St. Martin's are particularly dark - the island's observatory is open to the public for stargazing once a week throughout the summer.

Lesø, Denmark

Lesø, located in the Kattegat Strait between Frederikshavn, Denmark, and Gothenburg, Sweden, has the highest number of hours of sunshine in Denmark. Visitors can enjoy 25 kilometers of sandy beaches, visit salt works where salt is produced using medieval methods, and explore traditional houses covered with seaweed.

Ven, Sweden

The island of Vän in the Öresund Strait between Sweden and Denmark is ideal for exploring by bike. Cycling routes pass by the Tycho Brahe Museum, dedicated to the famous 16th-century astronomer, and the Spirit of Ven distillery, which offers tours and whiskey tastings. Visitors can also enjoy coffee and cakes in local coffee shops or picnics on the slopes overlooking the sea.

Rügen, Germany

The largest island in Germany, located in the Baltic Sea off the country's northeast coast. It is home to nature reserves with lagoons, beech forests with hiking trails, and the white coastal cliffs of the UNESCO-protected Jasmund National Park. There is even an old steam-powered railroad called the Rushing Roland.

Åland Islands, Finland

The average daytime temperature in summer is about 19°C, which is very convenient for exploring the archipelago. On more than 6,700 inhabited and uninhabited islands, you can see Bronze Age settlements and sunbathing seals. The main island is a great base to start exploring, with many shops, restaurants and museums.

São Miguel, Azores

The island of São Miguel offers many attractive places, including the twin crater lakes in Sete Cidades, geothermal pools in Furnas and the 30-meter waterfall of Salto do Rosal. The summer season is also the peak time for whale watching in the Azores, and tours on a variety of vessels can be easily found at the Ponta Delgada marina.

Gran Canaria, Spain

Thanks to the cool breezes from the Azores, Gran Canaria enjoys a comfortable warmth in summer. Daytime temperatures from June to August reach a maximum of 20°C to 23°C.

The third largest Canary Island, known as the “miniature continent” due to its diverse landscapes, offers rugged sand dunes, whitewashed fishing villages, palm-lined valleys, mountains and more than 80 beaches with sand that resembles a marzipan treat.

Saaremaa, Estonia

The largest of Estonia's 2,000 islands, Saaremaa offers many interesting places. It is home to the 7,500-year-old Kaali meteorite crater, the tilted Kipsaare lighthouse, and Kuressaare Castle, one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in Estonia. Visitors can enjoy walks on the beach and local restaurants.

A day trip to neighboring Kihnu is another must-do. Known for its matriarchal society, this island is an immediate eye-catcher. Visitors can take a look at the Kihnu Museum and take a tour of the island by truck.
