The UN World Tourism Organisation has published a list of countries that have become the most visited and popular over the past year. The list also includes the states that spend the most on the tourism industry and those who earn billions from it. The UN analysis is published by Euronews Travel.

Which countries spent the most on tourism?

Tourists from Germany, the UK and Italy stand out for significant travel spending, according to the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO). European countries lead the way in several ranking categories.

Chinese travellers recorded the highest tourism spending in 2023, spending around €183 billion. Following the opening of borders for international travel after the COVID-19 pandemic, Chinese travellers surpassed Americans, who spent 114 billion euros. The previous year, the primacy belonged to tourists from the US.

The third place in terms of spending was taken by Germans, who spent 104 billion euros, and in fourth position were the British with 102 billion euros. Next came Canada, Italy, India, the occupying country russia and Korea. It is noteworthy that Italy rose from 10th to 7th place in the list of countries with the highest tourism spending in 2023.

Note that while travelling, tourists often pay a huge amount of money for medical services. However, this is one of the few expenses that you can save money on without losing quality services. An insurance policy that is designed to help tourists feel safe and secure without spending too much will always help. You can get travel insurance quickly and without unnecessary worries here.

Who earns the most from tourism?

In 2023, the top earner in terms of tourism revenue is the USA, earning 164 billion euros. They are followed by Spain with an income of 86 billion euros. Third place went to the United Kingdom with 69 billion euros, followed by France with 64 billion euros and Italy with 52 billion euros.

The list also includes the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Australia, Canada, Japan, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Macau (China), India and Mexico.

Which countries are the most popular with tourists?

Two European countries lead the way in the number of international tourists. France is again the most visited country in the world, attracting 100 million foreign tourists in a year. These figures are expected to continue in 2024 thanks to the Paris Olympics, which will be held in July and August and will attract many travellers. In second place is Spain with 85 million visitors.

Seven of the top ten most popular tourist destinations are located in Europe. Italy, Germany and Austria round out the list, making Europe one of the most sought-after regions for travellers. Europe attracts the largest number of international visitors worldwide.

China has also been one of the most popular destinations for years, but the number of tourists has dropped significantly after strict entry requirements were imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic. The number of visitors fell from 65.7 million in 2019 to 35.5 million in 2023.

We remind you! Germany will soon welcome millions of tourists and fans who want to attend one of the most popular events of football Europe - Euro 2024. This tournament will be hosted by ten cities that are packed with culture and diversity. What these cities are unique, what attractions they offer and what you need to know about Germany in general, we tell you here.
