The procedure for acquiring Ukrainian citizenship is carried out solely at the initiative of a person. An application for citizenship may be filed not only by a stateless person, but also by a foreigner who undertakes to terminate his/her foreign citizenship within two years from the date of registration as a citizen of Ukraine. Persons who have acquired citizenship and have undertaken to terminate their foreign citizenship receive temporary certificates of Ukrainian citizenship for a period of up to two years.
