Speed limits in Poland: what you need to know about sectional meters on the roads
Recently, it has been announced that new sectional speed meters will soon appear on Polish roads to regulate traffic and improve safety. Find out more about the devices, how they work and where they are installed
The special system of sectional speed measurement on Polish roads differs from the usual radars and cameras. What is the difference, how do the meters work, and how to avoid getting a fine for speeding in Poland - we will tell you further in the article.
Sectional speed cameras in Poland: how do they work?
A sectional speed meter is a modern system of road speed control that allows you to accurately record the average speed of a car on a certain section of the road. Unlike stationary radars, which measure speed at a single point, sectional speed meters analyse the speed over a certain stretch of road.
The system consists of two or more sensors installed on the road at a certain distance from each other. When a car passes the first sensor, the system records the time. When it passes the second sensor, the time is recorded again. Based on the known distance between the sensors and the recorded time, the average speed of the car on this section is calculated.
Where are the car speed meters located in Poland?
The installation of sectional speed meters is part of the initiative ‘Development of the Operational Capacity of the Automatic Traffic Control Centre in Managing Safety on Polish Roads’, which is designed to reduce the number of accidents on particularly dangerous road sections where drivers tend to exceed the speed limit.
Currently, there are around 70 sectional speed meters in operation in Poland.
Recently, new devices were installed on the A4 road near Wroclaw, and sectional speed meters are expected to appear on the Wroclaw A8 bypass road in the near future. In total, the General Inspectorate of Road Transport of Poland plans to install another 43 devices on various sections of the country's roads.
There is no exact date for the installation of the devices on the roads yet, but it is known that the project is expected to be completed in June 2026.
