A trip from Ukraine to Poland by car requires careful planning and preparation. It is necessary to choose a convenient route in advance and get acquainted with the rules of border crossing. Read more about driving your own car to Poland, checkpoints, traffic rules, and everything you need to know before travelling - in this article.

What documents are needed to travel to Poland from Ukraine?

The following documents are required to cross the Ukraine-Poland border by car:

● international passport;

● national driving licence containing the expiry date;
● vehicle registration certificate;
● identification mark of Ukraine on the vehicle;
● nationally issued number plate;
● compulsory insurance contract Green Card.

Important! Only vehicles with Ukrainian state-issued number plates can successfully cross the border with Hungary. Individual number plates are valid only on the territory of Ukraine.

Green card: Poland

Remember that all vehicles with Ukrainian registration are required to have a valid Green Card insurance policy when entering Poland.

The Green Card is a mandatory international motor third party liability insurance policy that covers the costs of compensation for damage caused to life, health and property of third parties as a result of an accident in Poland and other member states of the international Green Card agreement.

It is also worth remembering that in the event of an accident abroad, a driver who does not have a Green Card for a car risks spending tens of thousands of euros on car repairs and compensation for damages.

It is better to buy insurance online, as it is quick and easy. On the Visit Ukraine portal, you can take out a Green Card policy from a licensed insurer. Packages are available for different periods from 15 days to 1 year for cars and trucks, trailers and semi-trailers for trucks, as well as motorcycles and scooters. It should be borne in mind that the insurance starts the day after the policy is issued, so we recommend that you read the terms and conditions in advance and purchase a Green Card.

Penalty for not having a Green Card in Poland

Keep in mind that there are significant fines for not having a Green Card policy. In Poland, if you do not have the policy during the first 14 days of your stay, the fine may amount to PLN 2,800, and if you exceed this period, the cost will double, reaching PLN 5,600.
