A new wave of strikes in Europe: where will train and plane cancellations and delays occur in September?
September 2024 promises a new wave of transportation strikes in Europe. Find out where transportation cancellations and delays are expected to occur to be prepared for your trip
Europe is already used to regular strikes as workers fight for better working conditions and higher wages. In September 2024, a new wave of transportation strikes is planned, which may affect your travels. If you are planning a trip, we advise you to check the schedule in advance and prepare for possible delays.
Germany: indefinite strikes at Discover airlines
The pilots and flight attendants of Discover, a subsidiary of Lufthansa, voted to go on indefinite strike in September. If their demands for higher wages and better working conditions are not met, the airline could face widespread disruptions.
Discover operates a fleet of 27 aircraft serving routes from Frankfurt and Munich to destinations in Europe and other continents. If you are planning to fly with this airline, follow the news and be prepared for changes in the schedule.
Netherlands: public transport strikes in major cities
On September 12, 2024, the Netherlands will host a large-scale public transport strike in the country's largest cities, such as Amsterdam, The Hague, and Rotterdam. The reason for the protest is the dissatisfaction of employees who demand the possibility of early retirement in physically demanding professions.
This strike could seriously affect transportation between major tourist destinations, so it is recommended to plan routes in advance and use alternative means of transportation.
Portugal: strike by Groundforce employees
On August 31 and September 1, 2024, employees of the airport maintenance company Groundforce will go on strike in Portugal. The Portuguese transport workers' union (Sttamp) has warned of “significant disruptions” that could lead to delays and “numerous flight cancellations.” The strike will affect all destinations operated by SPdH - Portuguese Handling Services, including flights operated by the national airline TAP. The union advises passengers to check the status of their flights with the airlines.

United Kingdom: strikes on the railways and the border guard service
The UK will also face a number of strikes in the transportation sector, which may cause inconvenience to travelers. LNER rail drivers have announced a series of strikes that will last every weekend from August 31 to November 10, 2024. The strikes were caused by the company's alleged breach of contracts and deteriorating working conditions.
LNER operates intercity services between London King's Cross and major cities in the north of England and Scotland, such as Aberdeen, Inverness, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Newcastle, York, Leeds and Doncaster. However, despite the strikes, trains of other operators, such as Avanti, running on the Western Main Line between London, Glasgow and Edinburgh, will continue to operate.
In addition, tourists are warned that due to the strikes, there may be problems with the service of the Border Guard, which could lead to delays at the borders. This is especially true at the end of the summer season, when many people return home from vacation.
How to prepare for a trip in the face of strikes?
Before traveling, be sure to check the current schedule and contact your carrier for information about possible delays or cancellations. In the event of a transportation cancellation or delay, you are entitled to a new ticket or compensation. Read the rules to be sure of your rights while traveling.
Travel insurance can be an additional protection in case of unforeseen situations abroad. After all, the insured person can count not only on medical care in case of illness or accident, but also on reimbursement in case of flight delays, assistance in case of loss of documents or luggage, and a transfer to the destination in case of problems with personal transport (depending on the type and package of insurance chosen). You can get insurance from a licensed insurer for traveling in Europe on the Visit Ukraine portal.
We remind you! Traveling to and from Ukraine is difficult due to the closed airspace, and therefore you can only cross the border by land. Read more about the trains that run between Ukraine and European countries that can help you get to your destination in our previous article.
