In August and early September 2024, Poland closed or restricted traffic at 3 border crossing points due to repair work. Here are the details of these restrictions.

Restrictions on travel through the Shehyni-Medica checkpoint. What is known?

The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine announced that on August 26, starting at 9:00 am, scheduled repairs will be started at the Polish-Ukrainian checkpoint “Shehyni”. In this regard, the border guards warned Ukrainians about a possible slowdown in traffic at this section.

The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine (SBGS) notes that it is about the clearance of trucks and buses to leave Ukraine. The repairs will be carried out simultaneously in two lanes and will last for a month and a half, i.e. until mid-October.

Note. The Shehyni-Medica border crossing point is one of the main automobile checkpoints on the border between Ukraine and Poland. It is located between the Ukrainian village of Shehyni in Lviv Oblast and the Polish village of Medyka in Podkarpackie Voivodeship.

This checkpoint is open around the clock and, in addition to vehicular traffic, also provides pedestrian traffic, which should not be affected by the repair work.

Details of the closure of the Dorohusk border crossing point

Earlier, on August 5, 2024, Poland closed the Dorohusk border crossing point, where repair work has also begun. On the eve of the closure, about 300 trucks were lined up to leave Poland for Ukraine through this border crossing. At that time, the estimated waiting time for crossing the border was 10-12 hours.

According to the Polish side, repair work at the Dorohursk checkpoint will last until November 14 this year. It is noted that truck drivers have already been warned about possible traffic complications and increased waiting time to enter Poland from this point.

“The estimated completion date of the reconstruction is November 14 this year. Until then, carriers should choose other checkpoints if possible. Work and related difficulties will begin on Monday,” the statement said.

Repairs at Ustyluh-Zosin checkpoint

On September 2, 2024, the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine reported that traffic may also be slowed down at the Ustyluh-Zosin checkpoint in Volyn, Ukraine, on the border with Poland due to repair work. The reconstruction has been started by the Infrastructure Restoration and Development Service in Volyn Oblast, and it is the section of the border crossing to Ukraine.

The contractors will be installing roofs, drainage networks, fencing, road surfaces, as well as repairing a distribution fence and four barriers, with a total cost of UAH 3,230,000. The repairs are scheduled to be completed by November 30, 2024.

In this regard, there may be queues at the checkpoint, Volyn Customs reported on September 2.

“The Service for Infrastructure Restoration and Development in Volyn Oblast has started repairing the Ustyluh-Zosin checkpoint at the entry point to Ukraine. Installation work requires partial restriction of traffic in certain lanes, which may slow down traffic at this checkpoint,” the statement said.

As a reminder, vehicles weighing up to 7.5 tons, empty vehicles weighing more than 7.5 tons, and passenger buses are allowed to pass through the Ustyluh-Zosin checkpoint. Vehicles are allowed to leave Ukraine in an electronic queue.

Traffic restrictions at the Rava-Ruska - Hrebenne checkpoint

The Rava-Ruska - Hrebenne checkpoint (Lviv region, Zhovkva district), which allows passenger, freight and passenger vehicles, as well as buses and pedestrians (for evacuation purposes), also previously restricted traffic due to repair work on the Polish side. For example, asphalt works are currently underway at the Hrebenne-Rava-Ruska crossing point, which will last until approximately September 12. Because of this, the border guards warned of slower traffic both inbound and outbound.

How to get to Poland by train?

One of the most comfortable ways to cross the border with Poland is by train. And after the launch of the Intercity+ train, both the speed and comfort of such a trip have increased. You can take this train to Poland from Kyiv and Lviv. If you are traveling, for example, from Uzhhorod, then you should get to Lviv in a convenient way and take the train. The train departs at 12:17.

Please note! Polish railways have extended the repair of infrastructure at the Dorohusk border railway station until September 30, which causes temporary restrictions for some trains from Ukraine. The restrictions apply to trains No. 23 Kyiv-Chelm, No. 93/94 Kharkiv-Chelm-Kharkiv, No. 120 Chełm-Dnipro. They will only reach the Dorohusk station instead of Chełm, which is only 25 km away.

The restrictions do not apply to trains #67/68 Kyiv-Warsaw-Kyiv, #19/20 Kyiv-Chelm-Kyiv, #119 Dnipro-Chelm, and #24 Helm-Kyiv. These and other connecting trains to/from Warsaw will run as usual.

Remember. To leave Ukraine by car with Ukrainian registration, drivers are required to have a Green Card international insurance policy. Without insurance, the car will not be allowed to cross the border. It is important to purchase a policy in advance, because according to the current rules, the insurance starts the next day. That is, you can take out an insurance policy “today” with an effective date of “tomorrow”.

You can buy a Green Card for a car quickly and conveniently on the Visit Ukraine portal. Packages are available for different periods from 15 days to 1 year for cars and trucks, trailers and semi-trailers for trucks, as well as motorcycles and scooters.

Just a reminder. Due to the martial law and restrictions imposed in Ukraine as part of the general mobilization, certain categories of citizens are not allowed to travel outside Ukraine. Read what rules for leaving Ukraine are relevant in 2024 and what documents you need to have to cross the state border.
