For Ukrainians who have been in Germany for more than a year, it is important to re-register their cars by September 30, 2024. This is a mandatory requirement for the legal use of a vehicle on German roads.

We will tell you how to go through the re-registration procedure, what are the requirements for insurance and car inspection - further in the article.

How to re-register a car with Ukrainian license plates in Germany: an algorithm of actions

1. Technical inspection (TÜV, DEKRA, GTÜ, KÜS):

The first step is to undergo a technical inspection of the car. If you have a certificate of conformity with EU standards (Certificate of Conformity), you only need to pass a general inspection. If you do not have a certificate, you need to make an appointment for a special inspection. The cost is about 259 euros.

2. Compulsory car insurance (KFZ-Haftpflichtversicherung):

To re-register, you need to take out compulsory car insurance. This can be done both online and offline. It is recommended to compare offers from different insurance companies to choose the most favorable one. The insurance covers the repair or replacement of damaged property and medical expenses in the event of an accident.

Obtaining compulsory motor insurance in Germany is quite simple:

● apply to the insurance company for car insurance online or in person;

● prepare a package of documents;

● sign a contract and make a payment;

● receive an eVB number - an electronic confirmation of the insurance policy.

What documents are required to obtain compulsory car insurance in Germany?

● driver's license;

● an identity document

● information about the driving experience

● vehicle registration certificate;

● you may also need to provide proof of purchase of the car.

You will need:

- An application (a sample is provided at the office),

- Proof of insurance,

- Ukrainian technical passport,

- Certificate of technical inspection.

It is also necessary to provide a German bank account number for automatic debit of the transport tax.
