What is currently known about abnormal weather conditions in Europe?

Austria

Austria is experiencing large-scale snowfalls and avalanches. In some regions of the country, up to 20 cm of precipitation falls per day. At the moment, conditions are difficult in the regions of Upper Austria, but the cyclone is expected to move to lower Austria. An avalanche occurred in Tyrol, when a group of 30 people was hiking in the mountains. At the moment, one person is missing, and on 15 September, one firefighter was reported killed during rescue operations. The Austrian authorities report an ‘unprecedented extreme situation’.

Poland

Strong winds are typical for Poland. Near Radom, a tornado damaged the roofs of 20 residential and commercial buildings, fences and cars were also damaged. On 15 September, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed that there was one death from the floods in the Kłodzki Poviat. The worst flood situation is on the banks of the Nisa River. Please note! The border crossings between Poland and the Czech Republic in Holkovice and Markleovice Hurne are closed due to bad weather.

Cyclone Boris has reached Odesa: what is known so far?

The large-scale downpour in Odesa on 15 September is a ‘greeting’ from the strong cyclone Boris that hit Europe a few days ago.

As a result of the downpour, several streets in Kyivskyi and Peresypskyi districts were flooded, and traffic was hampered on neighbouring streets: Heavenly Hundred and Akademika Glushko avenues, Chikalenko, Inglesi, Khimichna, Balkivska, Varnenska, Primorskaya, Tserkovna, Ataman Chepiga streets and Gazovyi lane. Emergency crews of the utility services are on duty here.

The area of Peresypskyi Bridge is in the flood zone.

Trams 12, 15 and 20 are currently suspended in Odesa.

At the moment, Odesa has been hit hardest by the cyclone, which has significantly affected its daily operations. You can readabout the peculiarities of its ‘life’ in 2024 in the material of Visit Ukraine.

Natalia Ptukha, a forecaster at the Ukrohydrometeorological Centre, says that most of her colleagues in Europe consider the weather to be abnormal and predict that Storm Boris will only calm down early next week. However, at the moment, the cyclone's intensity is already on the decline.

For safe travelling in Europe at any time, it is worth ordering health insurance. Please note that in Europe, health insurance is no longer a luxury, but a necessity, especially in times of natural disasters.
