On 18 September, Ukraine launched the information campaign ‘Of Course You Can!’. The campaign aims to help reduce the gender pay gap. The country's authorities aim to improve the situation by 2030. We will tell you how they intend to do this below.

What is the situation with remuneration for women and men in Ukraine?

Before the full-scale war, according to the State Statistics Service, in 2021, the gender pay gap was 18.6%. In practice, this means that women have to work harder to earn the same amount as men - on average, this is 6.5 years of additional work in a lifetime.

In 2015, the gap between men's and women's salaries in Ukraine was 26%, and by 2021, it had narrowed significantly.

It is worth noting that Ukraine is a leader in terms of attracting women to professional and technical fields.

How does the country intend to improve the situation?

The goal of the campaign, which will be launched on 18 September, is to reduce the gender pay gap from 18.6% to 13.6% by 2030.

One of the important steps we are taking to close the gender pay gap is the development of a new Labour Code,’ said Tetiana Berezhna, Deputy Minister of Economy of Ukraine.

According to her, its adoption will provide women with additional options for professional fulfilment and strengthen the protection of their rights.

In particular, the Code will enshrine in law the principle of equal pay for women and men for work of equal value, regulate the legal protection of women working exclusively within the framework of positive discrimination, which will help to increase their competitiveness in the labour market.

The report also specifies that starting from 18 September, the Ministry of Economy, together with UN Women and with the support of the Office of the First Lady and the Government of Sweden, will launch a national information campaign ‘Of Course You Can!’ Its goal is to help overcome gender stereotypes regarding women's professional development and draw attention to the gender pay gap between men and women.

We remind you! Ukraine is launching the educational and grant programme ‘Start’ for women entrepreneurs. Read more about free training and the amount of grants offered to Ukrainian women starting out in business here.
