Slovakia is a popular country for temporary stay and residence of Ukrainians, especially after the outbreak of war. For those who move to Slovakia by car or plan to use a car in the country, it is important to understand the local car insurance rules. One of the main questions is whether Ukrainians need to take out a local motor third party liability insurance policy (PZP - povinné zmluvné poistenie).

What is PZP?

PZP (compulsory motor third party liability insurance) is an analogue of the Ukrainian CTP policy. It covers damage caused to third parties as a result of an accident caused by the driver. This type of insurance is mandatory for everyone who drives a vehicle in Slovakia.

Do Ukrainians need to take out PZP in Slovakia?

The answer to this question depends on several factors:

1. If you are staying in Slovakia temporarily (e.g. for temporary protection) and using a car with Ukrainian licence plates, you do not need to take out a local PZP policy right away. However, you need to have an international insurance policy - a Green Card. This policy is valid in the territory of the European Union, including Slovakia, and is mandatory when entering the EU.

You can apply for a Green Card in a few clicks on our portal here

2. If you plan to stay in Slovakia for a long period of time and register your car according to local laws, you need to apply for a PZP. The car must be insured by a Slovak insurance company, because after registration, the Ukrainian policy or Green Card will no longer be valid in the country.

How to apply for a PZP?

The process of applying for a PZP in Slovakia is quite simple. There are many insurance companies operating in Slovakia that offer different packages. Among the most popular companies are Allianz, Generali, Kooperativa, UNIQA and others. Follow this link to compare offers and choose the most favourable one for you.

To apply for a policy, you will need the following documents:

- Passport or ID card.

- Car registration documents.

- Slovak identification number (if available).

- If the car is registered in Slovakia, local registration documents.

The cost of PZP varies depending on many factors, such as the driver's age and experience, car power, and the number of accidents in the past. On average, the price of a policy can range from 100 to 300 euros per year.

What should I look for when choosing insurance?

In addition to the mandatory PZP, you can take out voluntary insurance (havárijné poistenie), which will cover damage to your car in the event of an accident, theft or natural disasters.

It is also important to understand what percentage of the damage you will have to cover yourself in the event of an insured event. We recommend that you deal with this issue in advance.

In addition, please note that some insurance companies offer the inclusion of car evacuation services or the provision of a replacement car for the duration of the repair.

In general, Ukrainians temporarily staying in Slovakia with a car with Ukrainian licence plates need only have a Green Card. However, in case of a long-term stay and registration of a car in Slovakia, it is necessary to obtain a local PZP policy.

We remind you! Slovakia remains on the list of countries where many Ukrainian refugees are moving to in search of protection from Russian armed aggression. This European country provides Ukrainians with a number of rights and benefits, including the possibility of obtaining temporary protection.
