The Czech Republic is considered one of the most attractive countries in Europe for tourists, students and people looking for a new home. However, when travelling to this country, it is important to take a detailed approach to the issue of insurance. We'll tell you who needs it and what rules apply to different visa categories.

Is insurance compulsory in the Czech Republic?

Insurance is compulsory for all Ukrainian citizens planning to enter the Czech Republic, regardless of the purpose of the trip. Given that the Czech Republic is a member of the Schengen zone, the basic insurance requirements are the same as for other countries in this zone.

The insurance requirements for entering the Czech Republic may vary depending on the purpose of the visit and the length of stay. By law, everyone arriving in this country must have a travel insurance policy. Although it would be more correct to call it medical insurance for travelling abroad.

It is important that the insurance must include at least 30,000 euros to cover medical expenses, as well as emergency medical care coverage, which must cover the entire Schengen area.

What insurance is required to enter the Czech Republic?

Health insurance is required for all categories of citizens to enter the Czech Republic, except for some special cases. This requirement applies to:

Tourists (short-term): citizens entering the Czech Republic for a short period of time on a tourist visa need a policy covering the costs of medical care. The policy must cover medical expenses of at least EUR 30,000 and be valid for the entire duration of the stay.

Students: For students studying at Czech universities or language schools, an insurance policy is a prerequisite for obtaining a study visa. This policy must provide for medical expenses coverage of EUR 50,000 and include emergency care, treatment and possible repatriation.

Employees: Those moving to the Czech Republic for work must also take out insurance as part of their application for a work visa. Such a visa requires a policy with coverage of €50,000 or more.

Those applying for a residence permit: if you plan to live in the Czech Republic for a long time, you will need long-term health insurance. In this case, the coverage is similar to the previous categories, but the policy must be valid for the entire period of residence in the country.

Citizens of Ukraine who have been granted temporary protection status can automatically count on health insurance from the state. Insurance for refugees is extended for the same period as temporary protection.
