Ukraine intends to resume civilian flights to one of its airports. Flights may be launched as early as the beginning of next year, Marsh McLennan senior partner Crispin Allison said at the 10th Kyiv International Economic Forum (KIEF) on 7 November, Interfax-Ukraine reports.

When exactly can flights be launched?

According to Ellison, this could happen as early as January 2025. By then, there will be 5-6 companies that want to operate flights from Ukraine.

He also said that it would be easier to provide insurance mechanisms for aviation if planes start flying from Lviv airport. However, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy insists that Boryspil International Airport should be opened first.

‘The president will hate me for saying this because he is focused on Boryspil, but the initial focus is on Lviv. It's a seven-minute flight from Poland,’ said a representative of Marsh McLennan.

What is needed to launch flights?

Ellison stressed that passenger Airbus-320s and Boeing-737s, as well as a small passenger airliner, will require at least three quarters of a billion dollars in insurance.

However, the final decision on flights will be made by the President's Office. It will depend on the performance of air defence and the security situation.

‘I keep saying that Lviv is much safer than Tel Aviv. People don't like it when I say that, but I do,’ he added.

Are airlines ready to operate in Ukraine?

One of the largest air carriers operating in Ukraine before the outbreak of full-scale war, SkyUp Airlines, has declared its readiness to return to the Ukrainian sky as soon as it becomes safe to do so. This was reported to Suspilne by the company's press service.

SkyUp explained that in order to resume flights, it is necessary to ensure flight safety, proper insurance, and a clear definition of responsibility for this.

‘Safety is an absolute priority. Therefore, until there is a safe sky, there will be no flights,’ the company said.

Earlier, Ukraine presented a roadmap for reopening airports during the war. At the same time, Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi said that security experts are discussing the possibility of opening an airport in Lviv.
