Car insurance in Austria: do Ukrainians need to take out a local motor insurance policy?
Before travelling to Austria, it is recommended to study all the current insurance requirements and features to avoid violations and ensure full compliance with the rules of the host country. Find out what insurance Ukrainian drivers need when entering this country
Austria, as a country with high road safety standards, has strict requirements for car insurance. For Ukrainians who arrive in this country by their own cars, the issue of obtaining a motor third party liability (MTPL) policy is relevant and requires a thorough understanding of the rules and laws.
Basic requirements for car insurance in Austria
Austria, like most European countries, requires that any vehicle travelling on public roads must have a valid third-party liability insurance (motor third party liability insurance).
This type of insurance covers the costs of damage caused to other road users in the event of an accident, including damage to property and personal injury.
Entering Austria with a Ukrainian car
For Ukrainians entering Austria for a short period of time by car, an international insurance card ‘Green Card’ is required. This card confirms that the vehicle has international insurance coverage and meets the car insurance requirements in Austria.
You can apply for a Green Card in a few clicks on the Visit Ukraine portal.
Please note that the Green Card allows you to temporarily stay in Austria and other EU countries without the need to take out a local motor third party liability insurance policy.
However, the validity period and the possibility of extending such a stay depend on the rules governing the period of stay of a car with foreign licence plates in the country. Usually, this limit is 6 months, after which it may be necessary to register the car in Austria.

When do I need a local motor third party liability insurance policy?
If a Ukrainian plans to stay in Austria for a long period of time or to establish permanent residence, as well as to use a car with local registration, there is an obligation to conclude a contract for a local motor third party liability policy.
This rule applies to all residents of the country, including citizens of other countries who have acquired permanent residence in Austria.
Important features of local insurance
Car insurance in Austria usually includes basic motor third-party liability insurance (Haftpflichtversicherung) and can be supplemented by other types of insurance, such as hull insurance, which covers damage to your own vehicle. This decision depends on the financial capabilities and preferences of the owner.
It should also be borne in mind that the absence of a local policy can lead to significant fines and legal consequences if necessary, especially for residents who are obliged to comply with local laws.
What should Ukrainians temporarily residing in Austria do?
For those who come to Austria for a short period of time, it is important to make sure that their Green Card covers the entire duration of their stay. If your stay is extended or you plan to use your car in the country for a longer period of time, it is recommended to consult with local insurance agents about the need to switch to Austrian insurance.
We remind you! The electronic Green Card has become a modern alternative to a paper international insurance policy for motorists. However, many drivers ask whether there is a difference between an electronic and a paper policy, whether they have the same legal force, and how the rules for issuing a Green Card have changed in 2024. Find out the answers to the key questions about the electronic GREEN CARD policy.
