Ukraine is planning to introduce toll roads at the request of the EU. Find out more about how this will affect drivers, which routes are being considered first, and what is important to have for safe travel
Ukraine is actively moving towards European integration, and one of the steps on this path is the introduction of toll roads. According to Serhiy Derkach, Deputy Minister of Communities and Territories Development, the creation of such roads is one of the requirements of the European Union.
Let's take a look at what has already been done and what prospects await Ukrainian drivers.
Legislative framework and route analysis
According to Sergiy Derkach, Ukraine has already developed a relevant draft law. Currently, traffic on six main routes is being analyzed to prepare an effective mechanism for the operation of toll roads. However, detailed information about these routes has not yet been disclosed. At the same time, negotiations are underway with investors and the European Investment Bank, which can help implement the project.
It is expected that the funds collected from toll road users will be used to build new highways and maintain existing roads in good condition.
As you know, work on toll roads in Ukraine has been going on for several years. In 2019, the first three routes for the project were identified:
Lviv - Krakovets (on the border with Poland).
Lviv - Ternopil.
Kyiv - Bila Tserkva.
It was planned that the first toll road from Lviv to the Krakovets border crossing would begin construction in 2020, but implementation was delayed.
In addition, the possibility of making national roads of national importance for trucks weighing more than 12 tons toll-free starting in 2023 was considered. The funds raised were to be directed to the state infrastructure development fund.

What will toll roads mean for drivers?
Although the idea of toll roads is controversial, it has a number of advantages. Toll highways can be an incentive for high-quality road maintenance, reducing congestion, and accelerating the construction of new roads.
However, it also means additional costs for drivers. To ensure a safe and comfortable trip, it is necessary not only to use high-quality roads, but also to have proper insurance policies.
Comprehensive protection for drivers: MTPL and green card
With the advent of toll roads, Ukrainian drivers will have more opportunities to travel both domestically and abroad. But it's important to remember that along with high-quality roads comes increased responsibility for compliance with traffic rules and insurance coverage.
Motor third party liability insurance (MTPL)
This is a mandatory insurance policy that covers damage caused to third parties in the event of an accident. The presence of this document is a legal requirement, and its absence can lead to serious fines.
Advantages of MTPL:
Protecting your budget in case of an accident.
Compensation of losses to the victims.
Minimizing the risk of financial losses.
Green card for international travel
This policy is required for traveling outside Ukraine. It provides insurance coverage on the territory of the countries participating in the international Green Card system, including the EU.
Advantages of the Green Card:
Peace of mind when traveling abroad.
Compliance with the requirements of international law.
Insurance coverage in many countries.
The launch of toll roads in Ukraine will be an important step in infrastructure development. Drivers should prepare for new realities by providing themselves with quality insurance products for safe and comfortable travel.
