Pylypets: why you should definitely visit this ski resort in winter?
Pylypets is one of the most popular resorts in Zakarpattia and a village that is more than 500 years old. Throughout its existence, Pylypets has repeatedly witnessed important events. Learn about its history and attractions, and create an individual route to suit your taste
The resort and at the same time the centre of the village community of Pylypets is located in Khust district of Zakarpattia region, with a population of about 1,000 people. Despite its small area, Pylypets has existed for more than half a millennium (founded in 1463). Interestingly, it is known for certain where the name of the village comes from - from the first settler, a shepherd named Pylyp.
What do we know about the history of Pylypets?
The village of Pylypets was first mentioned in historical documents in 1463. However, at that time it had a different name - Verpelepets - and was not a separate village, but a suburb of the village of Izky on the Repynka River. If we look for the name ‘Izky-Pylypets’ in history, we will find documents dating back to the 12th century. Accordingly, the village is at least 100 years older than the official registered date.
Back in the first centuries of its existence, Pylypets saw many historical and natural vicissitudes: changes of power, transitions and transfers between landlords, arbitrariness of the latter (yes, there are even mentions of this in church books), droughts and famines. The village even witnessed the suppression of the Ferenc II Rákóczi uprising by the Austrian crown.
What can you do in Pylypets?
Climb the mountains Vysoky Verkh and Hymba
Vysokyi Verkh (1242 m) and Hymba (1491 m) are one of the highest mountains in the Borzhava Valley, which is a real find for lovers of picturesque landscapes. As well as photographers, artists, writers and other creative people. Since the mountain slopes are not covered with dense forests, incredible views can be seen literally at every turn.
Ride the ski lift
This is especially true in winter, when the conditions for climbing to the top do not attract most tourists. While climbing, be sure to look around - the beauty will enchant you! In addition, the lifts are good for those who like to lose their maps and get off the route - everything is much easier here.
Visit the Shipot waterfall
Shypit waterfall is located at the foot of Mount Hymba and is one of the most beautiful in this part of the Carpathians. The water falls in five cascades from a height of 14 metres, creating an unforgettable atmosphere of a winter fairy tale in the middle of an ancient forest.
Taste the local liqueur
In Pylypets itself, you will find a handicrafts market. Here you can see traditional Transcarpathian paintings, pottery, clothes and fabrics. But not only that. It is here that the traditional Transcarpathian intoxicating drink, nalivka, is brewed. You can taste it right at the market or buy it as a souvenir and bring it back to your loved ones.
Go skiing or snowboarding
Mount Gimba, 1497 metres high, is equipped with three ski lifts to suit all tastes: the first and third slopes are gentle, the middle one is steep and uneven. There are also hotels, cafes, Transcarpathian traditions and customs - absolutely everything for a comfortable winter holiday.
