Ukraine is preparing to launch Direct to Cell satellite communications. It is expected to significantly increase the resilience of the national communications infrastructure. Find out what this project is and when it is planned to be implemented
On 30 December, Ukraine took an important step in the development of its telecoms infrastructure by signing an agreement with Starlink. The country is now preparing to introduce advanced Direct to Cell satellite communications technology. This was announced by Kyivstar CEO Oleksandr Komarov.
According to him, this event could become a historic one in the development of the Ukrainian telecoms sector. The new technology promises to solve one of the key communication problems - providing a stable connection where there is no traditional coverage of mobile operators or in conditions when terrestrial networks are down due to military or man-made factors.
How does Direct to Cell work?
Direct to Cell is an innovative service that enables mobile communications on ordinary 4G-enabled smartphones. Instead of using base stations, signals are transmitted directly via Starlink satellites. This opens up new opportunities for communication in remote regions and in extreme conditions.
Prospects for implementation in Ukraine
According to Komarov, large-scale regulatory and technical work is required to fully integrate the technology. However, by the end of 2025, Ukraine plans to become one of the first countries to launch this technology.
This project, in particular, aims to:
- Improving coverage even in the most inaccessible places.
- Ensuring uninterrupted communication for Ukrainians.
- Strengthening national security through stable communications.
It is worth noting that the introduction of Direct to Cell by Starlink will be an important step in the country's digital transformation. This technology will not only improve the quality of communication for users but will also become a key element of national security, especially in times of war and unstable infrastructure.
We remind you! The military and their families will be able to apply for new services electronically.
