Starting January 16, 2023, tourists who came to Venice, Italy, for one day and did not stay overnight had to pay a tourist tax. Under the then-current rules, travelers registered online, indicated the date of their visit, and then paid the tourist tax. The amount ranged from 3 to 10 euros, depending on the season, the number of people in the city, and other factors.

However, as of April 25, 2024, new rules will come into effect, and tourists will be required to buy a special "entry ticket" on certain dates.

Who needs to pay for entry to Venice starting April 25 and when?

First of all, the new rules will apply to day-trippers who do not stay overnight. However, travelers who stay in hotels overnight will have to register in the system to receive an official "exemption from paying the fee" (you can register and get the right to visit the city at a reduced rate here).

The fee will only apply at certain times and days during the high season, from April 25 to July 14. Namely, from 8:30 to 16:00 during the following periods

– April 25-30

– May 1-5

– May 11-12

– May 18-19

– May 25-26

– June 8-9

– June 15-16

– June 22-23

– June 29-30

– July 6-7

– July 13-14

The entrance fee (QR code) to the old town will be 5 euros per person for 1 day. At this time, there are no restrictions on the number of QR codes distributed daily.

Who is exempt from paying the tourist tax in Venice?

The following are exempt from paying the fee:

– local residents and their family members (if they have a document confirming the fact of residence in the city);

– tourists staying overnight (subject to registration in the system or receiving a free QR code at the hotel);

– children under 14 years of age (with documents confirming the child's age);

– holders of the European Disability Card and their companions (upon presentation of the card).

What is the penalty for ignoring the tourist tax in Venice?

It is noted that controllers will be placed at the main entrances to the city and near them, in particular at the Santa Lucia railway station. They will conduct random checks of visitors.

If the controllers detect a violation, tourists without a ticket will be offered to purchase one from local operators. But travelers risk a fine of 50 to 300 euros.

How to pay for the entrance to Venice?

Payment can be made through a special online platform. On the landing page of the official tourist website of the city, Venezia Unica, you need to enter the dates of your trip and make a payment to get a QR code.

Remember! Reliable insurance is the key to the confidence and safety of a tourist while traveling. After all, an insurance policy will not only help you get high-quality medical care, but also save your own money in an unforeseen situation, for example, in case of a flight delay or loss of luggage at the airport.
