A new checkpoint Velyka Palad - Nagyhodos will be opened on the border with Hungary for cars up to 3.5 tons. Find out what are the conditions of crossing and what infrastructure is provided at the border
Ukraine continues to develop its border infrastructure, and according to the Ministry of Communities and Territories Development of Ukraine, a new checkpoint Velyka Palad-Nagyhodos on the border with Hungary is scheduled to open in early April 2025. It will provide a comfortable border crossing for passenger cars and help reduce the load on other existing checkpoints.
What vehicles will be able to cross the border?
The new checkpoint will be designed to clear passenger cars weighing up to 3.5 tons. It will operate during the day, which will significantly improve logistics and reduce waiting time at the border.
In total, there are currently 5 automobile checkpoints between Ukraine and Hungary. The largest of them is Chop-Záhony, which is the only crossing point for trucks with goods weighing more than 7.5 tons.
Important for those planning a trip by car
If you are going to cross the border by car, don't forget to get a Green Card, an international insurance that is mandatory in the EU and guarantees financial protection in case of an accident abroad. You can buy insurance online in a few minutes on the Visit Ukraine portal, which will greatly simplify your travel preparations.

What infrastructure is provided at the checkpoint?
To ensure the effective operation of the checkpoint, temporary (modular) infrastructure has been built on both sides of the border. It includes:
● Border and customs control for fast processing of documents;
● An expanded road section and platform for convenient traffic flow;
● Necessary communications (water, electricity, internet);
● Security system (barriers, surveillance cameras).
The final works on connecting communications and installing the necessary equipment are currently underway.
How was the opening of the checkpoint approved?
The process of approval of the Velyka Palad-Nagyhodosh checkpoint started in April 2024. Since then, the Ministry of Communities and Territories Development of Ukraine, together with Hungarian partners, has ensured all intergovernmental procedures, ratified the necessary agreements and started the construction of the checkpoint.
The construction of the new checkpoint is in line with the Border Infrastructure Development Strategy until 2030, approved by the Government of Ukraine in 2024. This step will help strengthen international cooperation and improve cross-border mobility.
We remind you! If you plan to drive from Ukraine to Hungary by your own car, you should familiarize yourself with the rules for drivers in the country in advance.
