Are your car windows constantly fogging up? Here's where to look for the problem

Fogged-up windows in a car are not just a seasonal nuisance, but a sign of high humidity and problems with cabin ventilation. Let's figure out where condensation comes from, why it gets worse in winter, and what mistakes drivers make most often. Fogging of car windows is one of the most common winter (and off-season) problems. Many people are familiar with this situation: you start the car, drive off, and the windscreen quickly starts to fog up. The reason is almost always the same — excessive moisture in the passenger compartment, but the sources and contributing factors can vary.

Why do car windows fog up?

Fogging occurs when warm, humid air inside the passenger compartment comes into contact with cold glass. Moisture condenses and settles on the surface — this is especially noticeable in winter when the temperature difference is greatest.

Additional moisture is brought into the cabin by:

▪️ wet shoes and clothes with snow or rain;

▪️ passengers — exhaled air is always warm and humid;

▪️ water that gets inside through seals or mats.

The situation is exacerbated by poor air circulation. Closed windows, turned-off ventilation and turned-on recirculation prevent moisture from escaping, causing it to accumulate inside.

How to quickly remove fogging from the glass

The most effective way is to turn on the windscreen defrost or demist mode. In modern cars, this is a separate function that automatically directs a powerful stream of air onto the glass and turns on the air conditioning.

If your car does not have ‘smart’ modes:

▪️ turn the fan to maximum speed;

▪️ direct the air flow to the windscreen;

▪️ use warm air — it absorbs moisture better.

Cold outside air also helps because it is drier. Until the engine warms up, the flow will be cool, but the effect will still be noticeable.

Even in winter, it is worth turning on the air conditioning. It does not cool the interior, but dehumidifies the air, reducing the humidity level. Be sure to turn off the recirculation mode, otherwise the system will circulate the already humid air.

If there is no air conditioning, the simplest option is to open the window slightly. Fresh, dry air from outside will gradually displace the moisture from the interior.

How to prevent fogging

It is difficult to completely get rid of fogging, but you can reduce it:

▪️ use anti-fogging agents for glass — they create a thin protective layer;

▪️ install moisture absorbers (bags or containers with gel) that collect excess moisture from the air.

Such solutions are especially useful for used cars, where the interior is already prone to moisture accumulation.

How to get rid of excess moisture in the interior

If the windows fog up too quickly or the problem persists even with proper ventilation, it is worth looking for the cause deeper.

The most common sources of moisture are:

▪️ worn door and window seals — water gets inside through them and accumulates in carpets and upholstery;

▪️ fabric mats — in winter, they absorb water and retain it for a long time, so it is better to replace them with rubber ones;

▪️ clogged cabin filter — it impairs air circulation and increases humidity. It is best to change it once a year, preferably before the cold season.
