Ukraine plans to launch a new tourist cycling route that will combine the natural landscapes of Ternopil and Khmelnytsky regions and pass through national parks. The project aims to develop active tourism and preserve the region's unique nature. Learn more about the future cycling route, its length and tourist potential
As UNIAN recently reported, Ukraine is preparing to launch a new tourist cycling route that will connect two national nature parks and pass through some of the most impressive landscapes of Podillia. The route will start in the Ternopil region and end near Bakota, a place that has long been a symbol of quiet, scenic tourism.
We will tell you more about the details of the future route, its concept, and its significance for the region in this article.
Two national parks — one route
The new cycling route will be part of a large network connecting the Podilski Tovtry National Nature Park and the Dniester Canyon National Nature Park. Specialists from both national parks worked on its preparation and presented the official passport of the basic cycling route — a document that defines all the key parameters of the trip.
The main idea of the project is to develop cycle tourism with environmental responsibility in mind. The route is designed to direct tourist flows in a controlled manner and minimise the impact on the natural ecosystems of the nature reserve fund territories.
Where does the route start and where does it lead?
The cycle route will start in the village of Okopy in the Ternopil region. It will then pass through Kamianets-Podilskyi and end in Bakota. The total length of the route is over 35 km, and it is planned to take an average of about three hours to complete.
The route will include different types of surfaces and will partly run along public roads. The route passport also indicates the level of difficulty, terrain features and safety requirements, which will allow cyclists to realistically assess their abilities at the travel planning stage.

Why do you need a cycle route ‘passport’?
The official route passport contains a complete description of the route, from technical parameters to a list of natural and cultural locations along the way. Environmental restrictions and recommendations for responsible use of the route are specified separately in order to preserve unique landscapes for future visitors.
This approach allows for the integration of cycle tourism into natural areas without harming the flora and fauna and creates a clear standard for the development of similar routes in other regions of Ukraine.
What makes Bakota so attractive?
The final destination of the route is Bakota, a flooded village in the Khmelnytskyi region, often referred to as the ‘Ukrainian Atlantis’. Today, it is one of the most famous places for quiet tourism with panoramic views of the Dniester River. At the same time, the picturesque landscapes hide a complex history: the settlement, founded in the 13th century, was flooded in the 1980s during the construction of a hydroelectric power plant.
Active interest in Bakota began to grow relatively recently after the appearance of travel materials in the media and blogs. The new cycle route could be another step towards the systematic and safe development of tourism in this location.

The cycle route to Bakota is just one example of how new tourism opportunities are opening up in Ukraine.
