Lithuania has made an important decision for Ukrainians living in the country who plan to obtain a driver's license. From now on, the theoretical driving test can be taken in Ukrainian. This is another step towards simplifying access to public services for Ukrainian citizens who are in Lithuania under temporary protection.

Delfi reports on the innovation, citing official statements from the Lithuanian authorities.

Theoretical driving test in Ukrainian: when does the innovation come into effect?

Starting February 9, 2026, Ukrainians will be able to take the theoretical driving test at Regitra centers in Ukrainian.

Previously, this option was limited to only a few languages: Lithuanian, English, Polish, Spanish, and French.

The addition of Ukrainian was a response to numerous requests from Ukrainian citizens living in Lithuania who face a language barrier when taking exams.

Why Lithuania made this decision

Lithuanian Minister of the Interior Vladislav Kondratovich explained that the decision was made after numerous requests from Ukrainians to take the exam in their native language.

According to him, most Ukrainian citizens came to Lithuania to escape the full-scale war unleashed by Russia. Therefore, the state considers it necessary to provide them with real access to basic administrative services.

The Lithuanian authorities emphasize that the opportunity to take exams in Ukrainian is not only about convenience, but also about solidarity with Ukraine and people who have been granted temporary protection status.

How to register for the exam

Ukrainians who plan to take the theoretical driving exam can register online through the official Regitra services. During registration, you will need to select the language of the exam — Ukrainian will be among the available options.

It is important to note that the changes apply only to the theoretical part of the exam. The practical exam will continue to be conducted in accordance with the current rules and requirements.

Exam statistics in Lithuania: which languages are chosen most often

According to official data, in January 2026 alone, 10,823 theoretical driving exams were conducted in Lithuania. The distribution by language was as follows:

● 9,926 people — Lithuanian;

● 815 — English;

● 68 — Polish;

● 8 — Spanish;

● 6 — French.

The introduction of the Ukrainian language is expected to change these statistics as early as 2026, given the significant number of Ukrainians living in the country. The ability to take the exam in Ukrainian greatly simplifies the process of obtaining a driver's license. This is especially important for those who plan to work, study, or actively travel around the country by car.

At the same time, Ukrainians who plan to travel around Europe in their own car after obtaining a license should take care of insurance documents in advance.

A Green Card, an international insurance policy for cars, is mandatory for traveling abroad. You can apply for a Green Card online without queues and paperwork through the Visit Ukraine service, which allows you to prepare for your trip in advance and without unnecessary stress.

We remind you! The EU has extended temporary protection for Ukrainians, and Lithuania has adopted a corresponding decision. Thanks to this, tens of thousands of refugees will be able to continue to legally reside, work, and receive social support in the country.
