European tourism is gradually shifting its focus: more and more travelers are avoiding oversaturated resorts and looking for quieter, more affordable, and authentic destinations. That is why in 2026, attention will shift to cities that combine history, events, and atmosphere without excessive tourist hype.

Experts from the travel company Iglu Cruise have compiled a selection of Europe's “hidden gems” — destinations that could be real discoveries for next year's travels. This was reported by the Daily Mail.

Trenčín, Slovakia: European Capital of Culture 2026

In 2026, Trenčín was named one of two European Capitals of Culture. This means a large-scale calendar of events throughout the year: music festivals, art installations, theater performances, and renovations of public spaces.

Key locations include Trenčín Castle, which towers over the city, the city tower with panoramic views, and cafes on Mirove Square. In early July, Slovakia's largest music festival, Pohoda, traditionally takes place here.

The best time to visit is from May to September, when the city is alive with festivals and perfect for walking.

Ghent, Belgium: medieval atmosphere without the crowds

Ghent is often called “Belgium's best-kept secret.” This port city with canals and Gothic architecture retains its historical charm but does not suffer from excessive tourism like Bruges or Brussels.

Must-see attractions include St. Bavo's Cathedral with the Ghent Altarpiece, the Graslei and Korenlei quays, and Gravensteen Castle with its moats and massive walls.

The best time to travel is during the off-season (April–June and September–October). In December, the city turns into a Christmas wonderland with a fair and an ice rink.

Quimper, France: Breton architecture and gastronomy

Quimper has been designated a “City of Art and History” thanks to its architectural heritage and artistic environment. Along the Odette River are half-timbered houses that preserve the Breton style.

Here you can see the remains of medieval walls from the 13th century, the Cathedral of Saint Corentin, the pottery workshops of Locmaria, and take a boat trip. The city is also known for its gastronomy: there are Michelin-starred restaurants such as Allium and Sao, as well as Ti-Coz with local cuisine.

The best time to visit is from late June to early September. At the end of July, the Cornouaille Festival takes place with music and traditional costumes.

Turin, Italy: Baroque elegance and panoramic views of the Alps

Turin is often called the hidden gem of Italy. Baroque boulevards, royal palaces, and a palpable “Parisian” atmosphere create a special mood.

The main attraction is Mole Antonelliana, home to the National Cinema Museum. The glass elevator offers a view of the Alps. Tourists are also advised to try bicerin in an old-fashioned café and visit the Royal Palace.

The best months to visit are May, June, and September (truffle season). In December, the Luci d'Artista light installation festival takes place.

Poznań, Poland: history and modern urbanism

Poznań is distinguished by its bright facades on the Old Market Square and a harmonious combination of history and modern urban space.

Popular locations include Citadel Park, Lake Malta with its recreational infrastructure, and Wartostrada, a renovated green promenade along the Warta River.

The best time to visit is May–September. On November 11, the city hosts large-scale celebrations of St. Martin's Day with parades and local traditions.

Most of these destinations can be conveniently combined into car routes, especially if you are planning a trip through Central or Western Europe. Before departure, it is important to check the rules for toll roads in the countries of transit and destination. If you plan to travel on such highways, it is worth purchasing an electronic road vignette in advance. At Visit Ukraine, you can quickly purchase vignettes for various European countries online — without queues and fines at the border. This allows you to avoid unpleasant surprises and focus on your route.

We remind you! Europe has dozens of historic centers where medieval architecture shapes a unique urban space and attracts travelers from all over the world. Travel Off Path has compiled a selection of destinations that combine fortresses, ancient quarters, and cultural heritage from different eras. Read more about the most interesting medieval cities in Europe that are worth including in your itinerary in 2026.
