Georgia has extended temporary protection for Ukrainians: for how long?
The Georgian authorities have made a decision that directly affects thousands of people already living in the country. The period of legal residence has now been extended, but not for all categories of newcomers. Find out who exactly has been granted extended protection and until what date they can stay in Georgia without a visa
Georgia has officially changed the rules of stay for Ukrainian citizens. The authorities have decided to extend the possibility of legally staying in the country without a visa — but only for a certain category of people.
The relevant decree was signed by Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze. The document amends the list of countries whose citizens can stay in Georgia without a visa under special conditions.

How long has temporary protection been extended?
Ukrainians who entered Georgia and stayed there until 24 February 2025 can now remain in the country until 24 February 2027.
In other words, the period of stay has been extended by two years.
Important: this is not a new rule for all arrivals, but an extension for those who were already in the country on the established date.
How the terms have changed in the past
Before the start of the full-scale war, Ukrainians could stay in Georgia without a visa for one year.
After 2022, the rules were changed several times:
▪️ initially, they were allowed to live for up to 3 years
▪️ then the period was reduced again to 1 year
▪️ now a separate extension until 2027 has been introduced for those who already reside there
In this way, the authorities are securing the possibility of long-term residence for Ukrainians who have not left the country.

Who is affected by the decision
We are talking about tens of thousands of people. According to government data, there are currently about 30,000 Ukrainians living in Georgia. A significant number of them have been granted refugee status, and some have been granted residence permits.
The new decision allows them to avoid having to renew their documents annually and avoid the risk of losing their legal status.
