At the end of 2025, the Transcarpathian village of Kolochava was included in the list of the 52 best tourist villages in the world according to the UN World Tourism Organization (UN Tourism). For many Ukrainians, Kolochava is primarily associated with crocuses, but this village has much broader tourist potential — from a dozen museums to unique gastronomic traditions. As UNIAN reports, it is the combination of multi-layered history, mountainous nature, and developed tourist infrastructure that has brought Kolochava international recognition.

What makes this Transcarpathian village so special and why is it worth visiting? We will tell you more in this article.

Where is Kolochava located and what is known about the village?

Kolochava is located in the Kolochava River valley in the Transcarpathian region, surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains. The village is quite large — it has an official population of over 5,000 people and stretches for 15 kilometers, making it the second longest village in Transcarpathia. The settlement is part of the Synevyr National Nature Reserve, so in addition to historical sites, there are also plenty of natural attractions.

The history of Kolochava is closely linked to its geographical location. The first written mention of the village dates back to 1463, and it was founded by fugitives from serfdom in the first half of the 15th century. Throughout its history, Kolochava has been part of Austria-Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Carpathian Ukraine, the USSR, and modern independent Ukraine. Romanians, Hungarians, Czechs, and Jews have left their cultural mark here, and it is this diversity that has become the basis for the development of tourism. The Czech period played a special role: the classic of Czech literature Ivan Olbracht lived in Kolochava for a long time and wrote four books here, including the novel “Mykola Shuhay — the Robber,” which was translated into many languages and adapted for the screen. Thanks to these works, according to Transcarpathian historian Mykhailo Markovich, the village entered the Czech cultural imagination as a “village of legends,” and before the full-scale invasion, Czechs came here by the busload.

Ten museums in Kolochava: what to see and visit?

Kolochava's main attraction is its ten museums, which, according to locals, is one of the highest numbers among rural settlements in Europe. The museum complex is thematically diverse and covers several centuries of the region's history.

The Museum of Architecture and Life “Old Village,” opened in 2007, occupies a central place. It is the largest open-air museum in Transcarpathia, with more than 20 authentic buildings gathered under the open sky: the huts of a poor peasant, a shepherd, a weaver, a carpenter, a parish school, a smithy, a village bathhouse, and other structures.

According to local guide Yuriy Radivilov, the uniqueness of this museum lies in the fact that all the exhibits were collected from a small area within a radius of only 25 km, unlike larger open-air museums that represent entire regions or countries. The thematic excursion “Golet in Kolochava,” dedicated to the history and life of the Jewish community of the village, deserves special attention. Here, you can visit a Jewish house with a rich interior and an authentic tavern.

Other museums include the “Arpad Line” with four restored bunkers and the longest restored 100-meter defense line in Europe, the “Soldiers-Internationalists” memorial museum, the “Shtayer Bunker” with documents and belongings of fighters for Ukrainian statehood, the only museum of narrow-gauge railways in Ukraine, and the Ivan Olbracht Museum. Radivilov also recommends the old wooden Church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit, built in 1795, which has been preserved since Soviet times thanks to the creation of the Museum of Atheism. The guide also notes an interesting trend: recently, tourists, especially those from eastern and central Ukraine, have become much more interested in the history and lives of their ancestors, rather than just entertainment.

Active recreation, chani, and gastronomic tourism in Kolochava

Kolochava offers guests a full-fledged vacation outside the museum walls. According to Maria Shete, head of the tourism department of the Kolochava village council, tourists are primarily attracted by mountain landscapes, clean air, and mountain water, as well as the opportunity to experience an authentic way of life.

Active tourism options include hikes to three popular peaks — Topas, Strymba, and Darvayka — for which routes have been developed. The mountains are quite steep, so locals recommend them to experienced hikers. For water lovers, there are swimming pools and vats — large cast-iron containers filled with water, in which meadow grasses or fir branches are steamed, heated over a fire, and visitors take turns immersing themselves in hot and cold water from a stream. The village also has a vat with mineral water from the Borkut spring, which is considered beneficial for diseases of the musculoskeletal system.

Gastronomic tourism is a separate area of interest. Kolochava has authentic taverns, coffee shops, and two trout farms where you can catch mountain fish and taste it. Local dishes include bograch goulash, banosh made from corn flour with cracklings and bryndza cheese, as well as the signature Kolochava riplyanka — a potato dish that, according to the locals, should only be eaten hot. There are also professional beekeepers in the village who offer honey and apitherapy, including sleeping on beehives. Accommodation is available in rural estates, hotels, and motels with a total capacity of about 500 guests, with prices starting at 350 UAH per night.

Kolochava is a striking example of how much interesting there is to discover in the Ukrainian countryside. However, there are many more such places in Ukraine: the Carpathians, Transcarpathia, Polissya, and other regions hide dozens of locations that are worth the attention of travelers.
