The Kyiv–Kharkiv Intercity train service has been suspended until the end of March: what to do with tickets you have already purchased
Travel between Kyiv and Kharkiv has temporarily changed: Intercity high-speed trains have been suspended, and the route now involves a change of trains. It is important for passengers to know how the journey will now take place and whether they need to change their tickets. Find out what to do in this situation and how to get there without any unnecessary hassle
Direct rail services between Kyiv and Kharkiv have been temporarily altered. JSC Ukrzaliznytsia has suspended Intercity train services on this route until the end of March due to the current security and infrastructure situation.
Why the ‘Intercity’ service has been suspended
The company explains that the restrictions are linked to several factors. In recent weeks, traffic on the section between Poltava and Kharkiv has been disrupted due to infrastructure damage and power supply issues.
Trains were forced to be hauled by reserve diesel locomotives, leading to significant delays — sometimes up to 2–3 hours. In some cases, arrivals occurred after the start of the curfew, creating additional risks for passengers.
Restoration work is currently underway on the section and security measures are being stepped up to restore full high-speed train services.

Current train services
At present, Intercity train No. 722 Kyiv–Kharkiv runs only as far as Poltava-Pivdenna station.
Passengers are then offered an alternative: a transfer to trains with sleeping carriages, which continue on to Kharkiv. Train crews and station staff will assist with this.
In effect, the route is split into two stages, but the connection between the cities remains.
What to do with tickets already purchased
Passengers do not need to exchange or return their tickets — they remain valid, reports ‘Ekonomichna Pravda’.
Ukrzaliznytsia clarifies:
▪️ the ticket is automatically valid for the updated route;
▪️ transfers are organised at no extra cost;
▪️ staff at the station and on the train will help you find your way.
Passengers are also warned of possible delays, as trains are operating at reduced speeds on damaged sections.
When will the Kyiv–Kharkiv rail service resume?
According to preliminary data, full Intercity services between Kyiv and Kharkiv are scheduled to resume by the end of March.
However, the dates may be subject to change depending on the security situation and the pace of infrastructure restoration.
