How was the rating formed and what criteria were taken into account?
The ranking of the best European cities for digital nomads in 2026 was based on the analysis of 35 popular destinations. The research covers not abstract assessments, but specific indicators that directly affect the comfort of living and working remotely.
The analysts took into account the cost of living, housing availability, food prices, transportation costs, quality and cost of the Internet, and the level of security. The lower the costs and the higher the level of security, the more points a city received.
What did the study show?
The results clearly confirmed the trend: cities in Central and Eastern Europe today offer much more favorable conditions for digital nomads than Western Europe. The cost of living is lower, housing and transportation are more affordable, and the quality of the Internet remains high.
At the same time, the main problem in Western and Northern Europe is high prices, which significantly increase the overall living budget.
Interesting figures from the rating
1. The contrast between the cities was very noticeable and shows well why Krakow became the leader:
2. In Prague, a monthly travel card costs about 22.5 €, while in London it is almost 300 €.
3. The highest level of safety was recorded in Dubrovnik - 82.23, and the lowest in Lyon - only 40.87
4. The most expensive cities to live in are Dublin (~4700 €/month), Reykjavik (~4653 €) and Amsterdam (~4175 €)
5. The cost of housing varies from about 35 € per night in Prague and Warsaw to about 4000 € per month in Dublin and Reykjavik
It is against the background of such gaps in prices and conditions that Krakow looks like the most balanced option for living and working.

Why did Krakow become #1 for digital nomads in Europe?
Krakow not only topped the ranking, but also demonstrated one of the best results among all the cities analyzed, scoring 161 points out of 175 possible. This indicates the most balanced combination of costs, safety, and quality of life.
One of the key factors was the overall cost of living. On average, digital nomads spend about €1423.12 per month in Krakow, which is significantly lower than in most popular European cities. At the same time, the level of security remains high - 75.08 out of 100, which makes the city comfortable for long-term residence.
It is worth paying attention to the daily expenses that form the main budget:
- Food - about 148 € per month
- Internet - about 16 € per month
These are the categories of expenses that often “eat up” the budget in Western Europe, but in Krakow they remain affordable without losing quality.
Another important factor is the infrastructure. The city offers stable and fast internet, well-developed public transportation, and a large number of affordable housing. Combined with relatively low costs, this creates comfortable conditions for working remotely.
Krakow also benefits from the overall balance: while other cities have only one side that is strong (for example, security or the Internet), here all indicators are at a high level at the same time. It is this “golden mean” that allowed the city to outperform even more popular tourist and business destinations in Europe.

Budapest is in third place with 147 points. The average cost here is €1542.24 per month, but the city is characterized by very affordable transportation - only about €23.08 for a travel pass.
The top five also includes Prague (141 points, ~1276.65 €/month) and Tallinn, which, despite significantly higher costs (≈2627.12 €/month), attracts with high-quality digital infrastructure and fast internet.
In the second half of the ranking, there are more cities in Western and Southern Europe, offering a comfortable climate and lifestyle, but often losing out on prices.
