The Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary is one of the major feasts in the Christian tradition, symbolising the beginning of the story of the Nativity of Christ. According to the Gospel, it was on this day that the Archangel Gabriel brought the Virgin Mary the news of the Saviour’s birth—an event that has become the foundation of the faith of millions of people.

When is the Annunciation celebrated in 2026

Following the Ukrainian Orthodox Church’s transition to the new calendar, the date of the feast has changed. In 2026, the Annunciation is celebrated on 25 March. Interestingly, exactly nine months elapse between this day and Christmas — a symbolic period of anticipation of Christ’s birth.

The feast almost always falls during Great Lent, yet on this day some leniency in dietary restrictions is permitted, which underscores its special significance.

What not to do on the Annunciation

The meaning of all these prohibitions boils down to one thing — on this day, it is important to pause and not get caught up in the daily hustle and bustle. There is a saying: ‘On the Annunciation, even a bird does not build a nest’, emphasising that it is better to put off any tasks.

It is not so much about specific actions as about one’s inner state. The Church emphasises that on this day it is important to avoid irritation, conflicts and negative emotions. The Annunciation is about tranquillity, not haste.

What makes this holiday special

This day is seen as a symbol of hope and the beginning of new life. For believers, it is associated with trust in God and a willingness to embrace change, even if it seems difficult.

The Annunciation is an opportunity to ‘switch off’ from the outside world for a while and look within. That is why many try to devote time to prayer, visiting a church, or simply quiet reflection on their lives.

How to spend this day

The main thing is not to try to follow an ‘ideal script’, but to live this day mindfully. Even a brief pause, letting go of the rush, and paying attention to one’s thoughts already capture the spirit of the holiday.

Priests note that on such days people often become more emotional, so it is particularly important to stay calm and not react impulsively.

Superstitions and folk observations

Folk weather observations are traditionally associated with the Annunciation. It was believed that the weather could indicate what the year and the harvest would be like. But even these superstitions merely complement the main meaning of the holiday — a time of renewal and inner balance.

Reminder! Easter during wartime is observed under special rules, and Kyiv is no exception.
