Venice to Reintroduce Entry Fees in 2026: When Will Tourists Have to Pay?

Starting in April 2026, Venice will once again impose an entry fee on certain tourists. As reported by Euronews Travel, there will be more days subject to the fee this year: 60 instead of the previous 54. The decision primarily affects travelers who visit the city for just one day and do not stay overnight.

City officials are thus trying to curb short-term tourism, which overwhelms Venice during the peak months while providing limited benefits to local residents.

How will the Venice entry fee work in 2026?

In 2026, the tourist tax will be levied on visitors who come to Venice for a single day without staying overnight. The fee will apply on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and certain holidays, including Easter, for four months—from April through July.

The entry fee will apply only during peak tourist hours—from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Outside these hours, entry to the city will remain free.

On which days will there be an entrance fee in Venice?

The list of dates has already been determined. In April, the fee will apply on the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 17th, 18th, 19th, 24th, 25th, 26th, 27th, 28th, 29th, and 30th.

In May, the fee will apply on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 8th, 9th, 10th, 15th, 16th, 17th, 22nd, 23rd, 24th, 29th, 30th, and 31st.

In June, admission will be charged on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 19th, 20th, 21st, 26th, 27th, and 28th.

In July, paid entry is required on the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 17th, 18th, 19th, 24th, 25th, and 26th.

Thus, in 2026, the system covers 60 days when it will not be possible to simply arrive in Venice spontaneously without prior registration.

How much does it cost to enter Venice?

The base fee is 5 euros. However, for those who book their visit less than four days before their trip, a higher rate of 10 euros will apply.

To do this, tourists must register their visit date in advance on a special platform. After registration, the system provides a QR code that must be presented at checkpoints throughout the city.

Do tourists staying overnight in Venice have to pay?

Travelers who have booked hotel accommodations must also register and obtain a QR code. However, they do not need to pay separately, as the corresponding city fee is already included in the cost of their stay.

In other words, even tourists with hotel reservations should not forget to register, otherwise issues may arise during checks.

Where will QR codes be checked, and what fines are in place?

QR code checks will take place at seven entry points to the city. Additionally, further checks may be conducted at key locations in Venice, particularly near the Santa Lucia train station.

Tourists who have not paid the tax or registered as exempt from it face a fine ranging from 50 to 300 euros.

That is why it is worth taking care of registration in advance, especially if your trip falls during the peak tourist season. By the way, if your route to Italy includes several transfers or different modes of transport, it is convenient to check options in advance via Visit Ukraine, where a ticket booking system for buses, trains, and other modes of transport is available.

Why won’t Venice abandon the tourist tax?

The goal of this system is to reduce the strain on the city during periods of peak tourist influx. Venice has long faced the problem of short, one-day visits, when the city is overcrowded but local residents derive little tangible benefit from it.

However, last year’s statistics showed that the impact of the new measure was limited. The number of day-trippers decreased only slightly. On peak dates, nearly 25,000 people visited Venice—that’s roughly half the city’s population.

We remind you! Europe is getting closer: Ukraine is preparing to open another important railway route. The new route to Bulgaria promises to simplify travel, reduce the load on buses, and strengthen transport integration with the EU.
