Tulips have begun to bloom in Odesa; the bulbs were donated to the city by the Netherlands. This was reported by UNIAN, citing the press service of the Odesa City Council. Nearly 100,000 bulbs of Dutch tulips were delivered to Odesa through the Ukrainian Embassy in the Netherlands.

Where exactly the flowers were planted, when to expect peak blooming, and which rare spring flowers have already appeared in the Odesa region—we’ll cover all this in the article below.

Dutch tulips in Odesa: where did they come from and how many are there?

The flower collection arrived in Odesa thanks to the Ukrainian Embassy in the Netherlands. The total number of bulbs delivered is 98,000 of various colors. The delivery took place in 2025, and the planting was done in advance so that the flowers would have time to take root before the start of the spring season.

Dutch tulips are known worldwide for their hardiness and vibrant colors. That is why the city council considers the arrival of such a large shipment of bulbs in Odesa a significant event for the city’s greening efforts. According to city officials, the first buds have already opened, and mass blooming is expected in the near future.

Where in Odessa have the tulips from the Netherlands been planted?

A significant portion of the Dutch tulips has been planted in the city center. The flowers have appeared near administrative buildings, on 10 April Square, as well as in city parks and public gardens. This layout allows residents and visitors to Odessa to see the tulips during their regular walks through the city center.

The distribution of flowers across various locations in the city means that a colorful tulip carpet will gradually cover several districts of Odessa at once. The city council’s press service emphasized that the flowers are just beginning to bloom, and the true peak of blooming is still ahead—when the tulips will paint the city in every possible shade.

Rare spring flowers in the Odessa region in spring 2026

Alongside the blooming of tulips in Odesa, the season for rare wild spring flowers has begun in the Odesa region. The first spring flowers have appeared in the steppe areas of the Lower Dniester National Nature Park, including species listed in the Red Book.

In particular, the reticulated crocus—a Red Book species whose population is declining due to land plowing, trampling, picking for bouquets, and fires—has bloomed here. Another rare species is the Odessa primrose, which has protected status at the international, national, and regional levels. This plant is a Western Black Sea paleoendemic with a disjunctive range, and one of its few natural habitats is located on the slopes of the Karagol Bay. Such early spring flowers require particularly careful treatment from visitors to natural areas.
