Beach season in Kyiv: will it be possible to swim in the city’s water bodies in 2026?

This summer, major changes are set to take place at the capital’s lakes and reservoirs: instead of the usual mass swimming events, the city will focus on safety and a large-scale clean-up of recreational areas. Access to the shores will not be restricted, and infrastructure and patrols will operate as usual. Find out where you can relax and which lakes will be restored

There are no plans to officially open the beach season in Kyiv in 2026 due to martial law, though access to waterside recreational areas remains open. We look into whether it is safe to visit the capital’s beaches, how public services are operating under the restrictions, and which water bodies are set for a major clean-up this season.

Will the beach season open in Kyiv?

There will be no official opening of the beach season in Kyiv in 2026, following a decision by the capital’s Defence Council. Swimming is not recommended, but the authorities are not closing access to coastal areas. Basic infrastructure is functioning: the areas are being cleaned, the water is being tested, and lifeguards are on duty at the main locations.

Why has swimming been banned in Kyiv and who is monitoring the beaches?

The main reason for cancelling the official opening of the season is to ensure public safety whilst martial law is in force.

Despite the lack of an official start, the Kyiv City State Administration’s Department of Environmental Protection continues to closely monitor conditions at the water bodies. According to the department’s head, Pavlo Ivanov, city services are focusing their full attention on sanitary inspections, regular cleaning of the shoreline and replenishing the sand. As before, lifeguards are on duty at key locations, ready to respond promptly to emergencies. Continuous monitoring is also being carried out to ensure water quality remains under control and poses no hidden threat to beachgoers.

Which of Kyiv’s lakes will be cleaned this year?

In 2026, the city’s environmental policy prioritised the comprehensive revitalisation of five of the capital’s water bodies using chemical and biological methods.

The move away from mass swimming has allowed the city to shift its focus to restoring nature and improving water quality. Municipal services plan to clean up Desenka Bay, Lake Soniachne, Yordanske Lake and Lake Berezka. Experts will conduct a thorough analysis of water quality, select the necessary safety measures and remove excess vegetation. These measures should significantly reduce water stagnation, improve its quality and restore the natural purity of the city’s popular recreational areas.
