When and why is Border Guard Day celebrated in Ukraine?

After gaining independence, Ukraine maintained the Soviet tradition of celebrating on May 28 for a long time. However, after 2014, due to the war and the need to distance itself from the Soviet legacy, the approach changed. In 2018, the President of Ukraine officially moved the celebration to April 30—a day symbolically linked to the formation of Ukraine’s own border security system.

April 30 was not chosen by chance. It was on this day in 1918 that separate units responsible for guarding the state border of the Ukrainian People’s Republic were established. This decision cemented the historical connection between the modern border guard service and Ukrainian statehood and emphasized the continuity of its own, rather than Soviet, military traditions.

Today, this date has taken on a different meaning. State Border Guard Service of Ukraine: How the Forces Are Organized

The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine is a special-purpose law enforcement agency that performs both security and defense functions. Its structure is designed to ensure border control on land, at sea, and in the air.
