The world is once again on high alert following reports of fatalities on board an expeditionary vessel. The focus has been on a rare infection that has forced European countries to take emergency measures. Spain became the first country to implement strict safety measures, organising the compulsory isolation of its citizens. This is reported by El Pais.

Hantavirus in Spain: why was quarantine imposed?

The Spanish authorities reacted swiftly to the threat of the infection spreading. At the government’s request, the Central Court of Madrid ordered the compulsory isolation of 14 Spanish citizens who had travelled on the MV Hondius and may have come into contact with the pathogen.

Interestingly, Defence Minister Margarita Robles initially described the quarantine as ‘voluntary’, but the court order officially revoked this leniency. The arrivals will now be placed in separate wards at the Gomez Ulla Central Defence Hospital. The standard isolation period is seven calendar days, but this may be extended depending on the results of medical monitoring. Any breach of the regime faces serious sanctions under the General Public Health Act.

Hantavirus and the cruise ship Hondius

The situation began to escalate rapidly following the detection of an outbreak on the expedition ship ‘MV Hondius’. Reports of fatalities on board caused a major stir in the global media and prompted the WHO to take control of the situation.

The ship is currently heading for the Canary Islands, but its arrival is already causing tension. Local dockworkers have staged protests and are refusing to service the ship for fear of infection. Meanwhile, the authorities assure that contact with the island’s residents is impossible: foreign passengers will be repatriated to their home countries, whilst Spanish nationals will be transported to Madrid on special isolated flights.

It is also known that there are five Ukrainian citizens among the ship’s passengers. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, no signs of the disease have been detected in them so far.

What does the Hantavirus quarantine involve?

The Spanish government has approved a strict but transparent medical protocol for all arrivals. To minimise risks, doctors will carry out PCR testing twice: on the first day of arrival at the hospital and on the seventh day of quarantine.

Twice a day, medical staff take patients’ temperatures and check for characteristic symptoms. Despite the strict conditions, those in isolation are guaranteed contact with the outside world — they can communicate freely with family and loved ones using electronic devices.

Symptoms of hantavirus: how is it transmitted and why is it dangerous?

Against the backdrop of the news, many people have begun to take a keen interest in the nature of this disease. Hantavirus is a rare but extremely dangerous infection that primarily affects the human lungs and kidneys. The disease can lead to serious complications, including death. Doctors in quarantine are closely monitoring initial symptoms such as high fever, cough, muscle pain and shortness of breath.

Despite the alarming news, experts are urging people not to panic and emphasise a key difference between hantavirus and coronavirus: hantavirus is not transmitted by asymptomatic carriers. Thanks to this fact and the timely isolation measures taken, health authorities confidently state that the risk of widespread transmission of the infection among the population remains minimal.

Health insurance is an important tool for financial protection. The policy can cover the costs of treatment, medicines, transportation to the hospital and other medical services.

Take out insurance before your trip to be prepared for any situations abroad.

Frequantly
asked questions
How is the hantavirus transmitted to humans?
The main route of infection is through inhalation of microscopic virus particles released into the air from the dried secretions of infected rodents (urine, saliva or faeces). Infection can also occur through direct contact with rodents or their nests, or via a bite. It is important to note that human-to-human transmission is extremely rare and is not typical for most strains.
