The Cheapest and Most Expensive European Cities for a City Break in 2026: A Ranking by the Post Office
Post Office analysts named Sarajevo the cheapest city in Europe for a short getaway in 2026, and Oslo the most expensive. Check out the full ranking of the 10 most affordable and 10 most expensive cities for a city break and find out how much a trip to each one costs
Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, has once again been named the best destination in Europe for a budget city break. This conclusion was reached by analysts at the British company Post Office, who published their latest City Costs Barometer. To compile the ranking, they compared the cost of 12 everyday travel goods and services for two people in 50 European cities.
Sarajevo took first place in eight expense categories and will cost tourists just £248 (about 14,721 hryvnia) for two people for a short getaway. By comparison, in the most expensive city on the list — Oslo — the same expenses would be nearly three times higher.
“You can explore small neighborhoods on foot or visit museums and markets. Plus, you can eat out regularly without feeling like you’re on a tight budget. The low overall cost of living in Sarajevo is due to affordable housing, cheap public transportation, and inexpensive attractions, making it the best city for a short getaway in Europe in 2026," the ranking’s compilers note.
The authors of the ranking also highlight the broader logic behind their analysis: “When it comes to affordable city trips, people often focus on flights. But expenses after arrival are just as important as the cost of airfare. Food, drinks, transportation, entertainment, and accommodation—all of this adds up quickly, even on a short trip”.
