Water-based vacations in Ukraine in 2026: rivers, lakes, and hot springs instead of the sea

For the fourth year in a row, Ukrainians have been looking for alternatives to seaside vacations within the country—and there are actually more options than you might think. The mountain rivers of the Carpathians, the thermal resorts of Zakarpattia, the lakes of Volyn, and the picturesque banks of the Dnipro are more than capable of replacing the traditional beach season. For the fourth year in a row, most Ukrainians are choosing to vacation within the country—and the question of “where to spend the summer without the sea” remains one of the most pressing. UNIAN recently addressed this topic in its article.

We’ll explore below which specific locations are worth considering for those who want to be near the water without traveling abroad.

Carpathian Rivers: Water Amid the Mountains

The Ukrainian Carpathians are one of the few places where a vacation by the water blends seamlessly with mountain scenery. Most of the region’s tourist villages and towns are situated right on the banks of mountain rivers: the Prut, Cheremosh, Opir, and Stryi—each offering its own character and unique opportunities.

Some rivers are perfect for a leisurely stay on the shore, while others are ideal for rafting and river trips. Anglers will also find plenty to enjoy here. The range of accommodation prices is wide: from modest private guesthouses to comfortable hotels and spa complexes—depending on your requirements and budget.

Dniester Canyon: nature across four regions

The Dniester Canyon stretches across the Ivano-Frankivsk, Ternopil, Chernivtsi, and Khmelnytskyi regions—making it accessible from many directions. Along the canyon, you’ll find waterfalls, cliffs, diverse flora and fauna, hiking trails, and popular rafting routes down the Dniester.

For those who prefer to combine nature with city life, Kamianets-Podilskyi makes a convenient base. Accommodation options are available for various budgets: from affordable private lodging to comfortable hotels.

Thermal Springs of Zakarpattia: A Resort Without the Sea

The Zakarpattia region is known for its thermal resorts, which operate year-round. Berehove, Kosyno, Velyatino, Solotvyno—each of these destinations has its own unique features and price range. Some complexes are geared toward a sanatorium-style experience, while others offer modern spa vacations with a wide range of services.

Most thermal complexes have their own accommodations, but you can visit the pools without staying overnight—as a day trip. This is convenient for those who come for 1–2 days or are staying in nearby rental accommodations.

Lakes of Ukraine: Where to Swim

Not all Ukrainian lakes are suitable for swimming—some are protected areas or located at high altitudes. However, there are plenty of locations where a vacation by the water is entirely possible:

  • Shatsk Lakes (Volyn Oblast)—a chain of lakes with well-developed tourist infrastructure;
  • Bile Lake (Rivne Oblast) — a peaceful spot for a family getaway;
  • Lake Oleshnia (Transcarpathia) — combines a lakeside getaway with Carpathian scenery;
  • The Blue Lakes (Chernihiv Oblast) — a popular destination for residents of central regions.

Accommodation prices near the lakes vary depending on the distance to the water and the level of comfort. Having your own car significantly expands your options: the best value-for-money options are often located a bit further from the shore.

Where to see the best panoramas of the Carpathians — we explain here.

Bakota and the banks of the Dniester

The flooded village of Bakota in the Khmelnytskyi region is a place with a unique atmosphere. Minimal infrastructure, panoramic views of the reservoir, and a sense of true tranquility—this is exactly what attracts tourists who aren’t looking for a standard beach vacation.

It’s best to look for lodging in neighboring villages within a few kilometers.

Dnipro: a getaway close to home

For those who can’t travel far or want to spend a few days without long commutes, the banks of the Dnipro are a real alternative. Kyiv and Cherkasy regions offer accommodations with direct access to the water: from small cottages to full-fledged villas with their own recreational areas. Prices here are higher than in most other regions, but logistics are much simpler.

In Kyiv itself and other cities, water activities are traditionally available in the summer: kayaks, paddleboards, catamarans, and wakeboarding—an option for those who prioritize movement over tranquility.
