On the last Sunday in May, Kyiv celebrates its main festival. In 2026, one of Europe’s oldest and most beautiful capitals will celebrate its 1,544th anniversary. Despite all the trials it has faced, this city continues to thrive, blossom with chestnut trees and amaze with its resilience.

For Kyiv residents and visitors alike, this is a wonderful opportunity to put their daily affairs aside, go for a stroll and fall in love all over again with the steep Dnipro slopes, ancient streets and unique atmosphere.

The history of Kyiv: how the heart of Ukraine came to be

The year 482 is considered the official date of Kyiv’s foundation. According to ancient chronicles, the city was founded by three brothers — Kyi, Shchek, Khoryv — and their sister Lybid. The location was perfectly chosen: the high hills above the Dnipro served as a magnificent natural fortress, and the river itself was part of the legendary trade route ‘from the Varangians to the Greeks’.

Over its centuries-long history, Kyiv has witnessed the heyday of Kievan Rus’, devastating invasions, periods of decline and new revivals. Today, it is not just a metropolis, but a symbol of resilience, where a centuries-old cultural heritage intertwines with the rhythm of a modern European capital.

Where to go on Kyiv Day: the best places for a stroll

Celebrations for Kyiv Day have long gone beyond official events. The best way to experience the city on this day is to take a walk through its historic centre.

Andriyivskyy Descent and Kontraktova Square. The heart of Kyiv’s bohemian spirit. On festive weekends, artists, craftspeople and musicians traditionally gather here. A stroll along the cobblestones past the majestic St. Andrew’s Church is a must.

Volodymyrska Hill and the Glass Bridge. From here, you can enjoy that classic panoramic view of the Left Bank and Trukhaniv Island. From Volodymyrska Hill, you can easily walk across the footbridge to Khreshchaty Park and the arch.

Natalka Park in Obolon. If you fancy spending the day closer to the water and away from the bustling city centre, the renovated Obolon waterfront is the perfect choice for a family picnic and a leisurely break.

Mystical places in Kyiv: the legends of Lysa Hora and Zamkova

Kyiv is a deep and enigmatic city, steeped in hundreds of urban legends. Those who enjoy unusual routes should explore its most mysterious corners.

Castle Hill, towering above Andriyivskyy Descent, is considered the main mystical attraction. In ancient times, it was known as one of Kyiv’s Bald Hills. Tour guides love to recount tales of old witches’ sabbaths, and the site itself still draws explorers of the unknown with its unusual energy.

No less mysterious is the House of Richard the Lionheart, located nearby.

This neo-Gothic castle long had a bad reputation among Kyiv residents due to the eerie sounds coming from inside.

As it later transpired, the howling sounds within the walls were merely the result of an ingenious ventilation system devised by the builders to take revenge on their stingy employer, but the aura of mystery has remained with the building forever.
