Father’s Day is one of those rare occasions that doesn’t call for lavish feasts or ostentatious displays of wealth, yet every year it reminds us of what really matters. Today in Ukraine, this day takes on a special, poignant significance. Thousands of Ukrainian fathers are on the front line, defending their families and their country. For many children, this is the most important occasion to write a heartfelt message to the front line, to send a little bit of home comfort, or to quietly honour the memory of those heroes who will never return home.

Below, we provide a detailed account of the key facts associated with this date: when Ukrainians will celebrate their fathers in 2026, where this tradition originated, and how to choose a heartfelt gift.

What date is Father’s Day in Ukraine in 2026

In Ukraine, this family holiday was granted official status relatively recently. It was established in 2019 by a presidential decree to highlight the importance of a father’s role in raising children and strengthening the family.

Ukraine celebrates Father’s Day at the same time as many other countries around the world — on the third Sunday in June. As the date is not fixed, it changes every year. In 2026, Father’s Day falls on 21 June.

It is worth noting that this day is not a public holiday. Furthermore, under martial law, no additional days off are provided for in the country. However, on this very day, amidst the hustle and bustle of daily life, it is extremely important to pause for a moment and say those important words of gratitude and love to your dad, which often go unspoken on ordinary days.

How Father’s Day came about: the history of the holiday

The history of this heartfelt holiday does not stem from dry government decrees, but from the touching personal story of one loving daughter.

In 1909, Sonora Smart Dodd, an American from Spokane, Washington, attended a church service dedicated to Mother’s Day. During the sermon, she wondered why fathers did not have their own holiday, as her personal experience showed that a father’s love deserved no less recognition.

Her father, Civil War veteran William Smart, was left a widower with six children to raise after his wife died in childbirth. He brought them up on his own on the farm, devoting all his energy to them, without a word of complaint. It was to him that Sonora wanted to say her heartfelt ‘thank you’. Thanks to her persistence and sincere desire to express her gratitude, the idea of creating a new holiday became a reality.

Father’s Day was first celebrated unofficially on 19 June 1910 in Sonora’s hometown. The idea quickly resonated with people and began to spread across the United States.

However, it was not until a decade later that the date gained official status at the national level: in 1972, President Richard Nixon declared Father’s Day a national holiday. Subsequently, this fine tradition was adopted by the whole world, and today fathers are celebrated in the UK, France, the Netherlands, Japan and dozens of other countries.

How Father’s Day is celebrated in Ukraine and what to give dad

There are no strict rules or mandatory rituals for this holiday, and therein lies its main appeal. Every family creates its own traditions. Some prefer to lay a festive table and gather in a close circle, whilst others take dad out into the countryside, organise a barbecue or simply enjoy a long walk together. Adult children who live separately always ring their parents, send touching messages via instant messaging apps and share photos together on social media.

Now, when many families are separated by distance due to the war, the most precious gift is simply a gesture of care: a phone call, a message to the front line, a reminder that their dad is loved, remembered and eagerly awaited at home.

Reminder! Every year on 6 June, Ukraine celebrates Journalists’ Day — a professional holiday for those who keep the public informed about important events on a daily basis. During a full-scale war, the work of journalists has become particularly dangerous, as many of them work directly on the front line, risking their own lives for the sake of the truth. Find out how this holiday came about, why it is celebrated on 6 June, and let us remember the journalists who died in the line of duty.
