Starting July 1, 2026, Japan will introduce new consular fees for issuing visas to foreign nationals. This is the first significant fee increase in decades, which the government attributes to rising administrative costs and inflation. Single-entry and multiple-entry visas will see the largest price increases, while entry rules for citizens of countries with visa-free access will remain unchanged.

Japan Sharply Raises Visa Fees: What Will Change Starting July 1, 2026

New fees for Japanese visas will take effect on July 1, 2026. The decision was made by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which attributed the increase to rising costs of providing consular services and persistent inflation. This is the first revision of visa fees in nearly 50 years.

The fees for the most common types of visas will see the biggest changes:

- Single-entry visa – from 3,000 to 15,000 yen;

- Multiple-entry visa – from 6,000 to 30,000 yen;

- Transit visa – from 700 to 3,500 yen.

Thus, all major consular fees will increase fivefold. The new rates will apply to applications submitted on or after July 1, 2026. Applicants who submit their documents before that date will pay fees at the rates in effect at the time of submission.

How much will visas cost now, and what does this mean for travelers?

The increase in consular fees will primarily affect citizens of countries whose nationals are required to obtain a visa to enter Japan. For them, the cost of planning a trip will rise significantly, especially when it comes to multiple-entry visas or family trips.

At the same time, the changes do not apply to citizens of countries with which Japan has visa-waiver agreements. For them, entry requirements remain unchanged.

Those who are already planning a trip to Japan and need a visa should check the consulate’s current requirements in advance and, if possible, submit their documents by July 1, 2026, to take advantage of the current rates. It is also recommended to factor in the increase in consular fees when planning your travel budget, as the cost of obtaining a visa will be significantly higher than before.
