What changes could occur for Ukrainians in the EU in the event of a ceasefire or war in Ukraine?

The Czech Republic and Poland are preparing new rules that will affect the status of refugees, the possibility of extending their stay and returning home. Find out how the EU countries plan to regulate the migration of Ukrainians in case of the cessation of hostilities
In an interview with Novinky, Czech Interior Minister Vit Rakusan said that after a ceasefire is declared or the war in Ukraine ends, Ukrainian refugees will no longer be able to receive temporary protection in the country.
According to him, the Czech Republic wants to prevent a second wave of migration, especially from men seeking to reunite with their families.
Temporary protection will be automatically canceled the day after the end of hostilities. At the same time, Ukrainians who are already in the Czech Republic will be able to stay in the country for another year and a half, but they will have to apply for a new residence status.
According to the minister, about half of the Ukrainian refugees in the Czech Republic (approximately 200,000 people) wish to stay in the country. The Czech government is ready for this challenge.

Poland and the Czech Republic are preparing new rules for Ukrainians
Poland and the Czech Republic are already developing mechanisms that will prevent Ukrainians from using temporary protection to enter the EU after the war ends. This decision is explained by the fact that these two countries have received the largest number of refugees: over 990,000 in Poland and over 397,000 in the Czech Republic.
Czech Minister Vit Rakusan emphasized that the EU does not want Ukrainians living in Europe to be joined by their relatives, including men of military age who cannot leave Ukraine at the moment, after the end of hostilities. He emphasized that after the war ends, no one will be able to come to the EU under temporary protection.
A new plan at the EU level
The Czech Republic and Poland are working on a joint plan for the future of Ukrainian refugees after the war. It is expected that the main proposals will be developed by the end of June 2025, when Poland will complete its presidency of the EU Council.
One of the key initiatives is the creation of special centers in EU countries to facilitate the return of Ukrainians to their homeland. Such centers are planned to be opened in Germany, Poland, Austria, and the Czech Republic. They will provide assistance with employment, housing and adaptation in Ukraine, as well as support for those who wish to stay in Europe.

• Loss of temporary protection after the end of the war.
• The need to apply for other residence statuses.
• Restrictions on entry for relatives, including men of military age.
• The possibility of some Ukrainians returning to their homeland.
• Changes in social support and employment.
Ukrainians who plan to stay in Europe after the war should closely monitor legislative updates in their countries of residence.
