Rules for entry into Hungary for Ukrainians
What documents are required to enter Hungary?
To cross the border without any problems, Ukrainian citizens need to have the following documents:
- Biometric passport (must be valid for at least three months after the planned date of departure from the Schengen area)
- Health insurance policy
In Hungary, the lack of medical insurance may be grounds for additional questions and temporary delays during border control, even if in some cases the policy is not formally specified as mandatory. In practice, border guards check whether the insurance covers the entire period of stay and whether it meets the requirements of the Schengen area.
We also recommend that you bring the following with you:
- Confirmation of the purpose of the trip (hotel reservation, invitation from an individual or legal entity)
- Financial security for the period of stay (cash or bank statement)
The following documents are required for children:
- Biometric passport of the child
- Birth certificate (in the absence of a passport)
- Children can cross the border with one of their parents without the need to obtain official permission from the other parent.
- If the child is traveling with relatives or friends, it is mandatory to have a notarized travel permit from one of the parents.
Do I need a Green Card to travel by car to Hungary?
Yes, the Green Card is mandatory for anyone traveling abroad by car, including refugees.
Just follow the link, choose the appropriate policy term and apply for a Green Card online in a few minutes.
In practice, even under visa-free entry conditions, border guards may ask for detailed information about the source of funds, living conditions, and other circumstances of the trip. To avoid unnecessary risks and pass the check with confidence, it is worth consulting a lawyer in advance regarding the preparation of supporting documents.
Do I have to have health insurance to travel to Hungary?

An insurance policy will provide you with coverage for treatment costs in case of unforeseen situations during your stay abroad, which guarantees your safety and peace of mind. What do I need to travel with pets?
Ukrainians can travel with pets to Hungary. To do this, the following requirements must be met:
- The animal must have a microchip.
- An internationally recognized veterinary passport with information about rabies vaccination made at least 21 days before the trip.
- A health certificate issued by an official veterinarian no earlier than 10 days before the trip.
- Dogs, cats, and ferrets are subject to the rule of mandatory rabies vaccination.
Has your passport expired or been extended — can you still travel?
Starting October 29, 2025, “extended” foreign passports and documents with children listed in them will no longer be valid.
To travel, live abroad, or return to Ukraine, you must have a valid biometric passport.
You can obtain a new document:
- in Ukraine — at the State Migration Service, Administrative Service Centers, or the State Enterprise “Document”;
- abroad — at Ukrainian embassies and consulates or at branches of the State Enterprise “Document.”
If you are stuck abroad due to an “extended” passport, contact the consulate, where you will be issued a return certificate.
How much money do you need to enter Hungary in 2026?
