Do Ukrainians need a visa to enter Germany?
Ukrainian citizens do not need a visa to enter Germany. You can stay in the country for up to 90 days within six months under the visa-free regime. To accurately calculate the allowed period, use a special calculator on the EU website.
💡 If you are forced to stay in Germany because of the war and need temporary protection, please follow the link for more information. Please note that the European Council has extended the validity of temporary protection for Ukrainians until March 2026.
What documents do I need to travel to Germany from Ukraine?
To travel to Germany, citizens of Ukraine need the following documents:
- Biometric passport. This document is the main document for crossing the border and must be valid for at least 6 months after your return.
- Health insurance covering expenses of at least 30,000 euros and valid for the entire period of your stay in the Schengen area.
We also recommend that you have a confirmation of your accommodation reservation (it can be a hotel reservation, a rental agreement or an invitation from friends or relatives living in Germany) and sufficient financial resources for the period of your stay in Germany.
What documents do I need to travel with my children to Germany?
Children under the age of 16 must have their own biometric passport or birth certificate (if they do not have a passport). They can cross the border with one of the parents without the official permission of the other. If the child is traveling with relatives or friends, he or she must have a notarized permission from one of the parents to travel abroad.
Important: children also need to have health insurance that covers possible expenses during the trip.
Do I need a Green Card to travel by car to Germany?
Yes, a Green Card is required to travel by car to Germany. This is an international car insurance that covers possible expenses in case of an accident abroad. It is required for everyone who travels outside of Ukraine in their own car, regardless of the status of the trip.
To apply for a Green card, you will need the following documents:
- Passport of a citizen of Ukraine;

You can easily choose and purchase a policy online on the Visit Ukraine website to be sure of your safety while traveling.
What should I do if my passport expires?
If your international passport is about to expire, you need to renew it before traveling. To do this, you can contact the State Migration Service or Ukrainian consulates abroad.
If you are already in Germany, Ukrainian consular offices provide a service for extending or issuing a new passport. It is important that your passport is valid for at least 6 months after your planned return date.
What if my child is with me without a passport?
If your child does not have a passport, there are several ways to solve this issue:
- Obtaining a passport for the child. This is the most reliable and recommended option. After the document is issued, your child will be able to cross the border without any obstacles, both independently and with his or her parents.
- Adding a child to the parents' passport. If the child is under the age of 16, his or her data can be added to the passport of one of the parents or legal representative (by court decision). This procedure involves entering the child's personal data directly into the adult's passport, which will allow him or her to travel with him or her.
What you need to know about entering data into a passport:
- Adding information about a child to the passport of a father, mother or other legal representative is free of charge.
- The procedure is carried out by prior registration at a diplomatic mission of Ukraine abroad.
- In most cases, this can be done on the day of contacting the consulate or embassy of Ukraine.
Crossing the border with pets
In order to cross the border with pets to Germany in 2025, the following requirements must be met:
- The animal must have a microchip in accordance with ISO 11784 or ISO 11785.
- A veterinary passport with information on vaccinations and the animal's health status.
- The animal must be vaccinated against rabies at least 21 days before the trip.
- Health certificate. A health certificate issued no earlier than 10 days before entry.
Some federal states of Germany may require prior notification of the importation of an animal from outside the EU. Check with the veterinary service before traveling.
