The Resonance agency, a leading consultant in the field of tourism, real estate and economic development, has published the rating "Top 100 best cities in the world in 2023 for living, working, investing and traveling".

Once again, London took the first place, Paris, New York, Singapore and Amsterdam also entered the top ten.

However, this year's rating became truly special, because in addition to the 100 best cities, the "Honorary Best City of the World 2023" was also chosen, and Kyiv became it.

What affected the rating?

The pandemic has turned life around the world, changed priorities and rhythm. According to the LinkedIn job search portal, every sixth job posted on the site today is "remote". Because of this newfound freedom, many people moved to smaller, more affordable, or more interesting cities. Populations decreased in New York, San Francisco, Athens, Chicago and Rome. This trend contributed to the economic development of small towns.

The economic and humanitarian crisis, which was provoked by russia's invasion of Ukraine, was also an important factor. moscow and st. petersburg, which entered the Top 20 last year, were removed from the ranking, because according to the Resonance team, no city can be "the best city" if it is part of a country that commits crimes in another sovereign state.

How were the best cities of 2023 chosen?

The analysis is carried out in cities whose population exceeds 1,000,000 people. Statistical indicators and qualitative assessment of local residents are grouped into 6 main categories:

• Place - assessment of the climatic features of the location, the number of important places, parks and green areas, the level of crime;

• Product – level of infrastructure development, number of airports, quality of transport connections, number of museums, interesting attractions, rating of local universities, availability of large conference halls.

• Leisure - a category that evaluates the fullness of life in the city - food, shows, shopping and nightlife. A number of interesting cultural events, quality restaurants, popular shopping centers and nightclubs recommended by local residents.

• People – the more diverse the population in a city, the more ideas it generates, because the most valuable resource of every city is its people. The level of education and the percentage of the employed population are evaluated in this category.

• Prosperity – citizens' incomes, standard of living and the presence or absence of large corporations.

• Promotion – frequency of coverage of the city in mass media, number of online articles, links and recommendations.

The honorary best city of the world in 2023 is Kyiv

Kyiv is the capital of Ukraine, a beacon of courage and resilience against the aggressor. It is located on the banks of the Dnipro, one of the largest rivers in Europe.

Kyiv is a major business center of Ukraine. The housing stock of the city is represented by apartment buildings and modern residential complexes. Transport infrastructure is a developed metro system and buses, trolleybuses and trams.

The city is rich in places of interest and attractions. The symbol of Kyiv is the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, a historical complex built in the 11th century. The city also has shopping and entertainment centers, innovative restaurants, etc.

Of course, the main achievement thanks to which Kyiv received the title of "Honorary Best City of the World" is the spirit, something that the russian troops could not break. The brave Ukrainian people turned the russian plan "Kyiv in three days" into a long-term and not at all victorious war for russia.

TOP - 5 best cities in the world

London holds the leading position for the seventh year and occupies the first place in the rating. The city became the leader in 4 categories: "Product", "Leisure", "People" and "Promotion". Many events and activities took place in London in 2022: Queen's Platinum Jubilee, RHS Chelsea Flower Show, Wimbledon and others. London continues to lead the promotions' category, leading the number of hashtags on Instagram, Facebook and TripAdvisor reviews. Also, the city has almost returned to its pre-pandemic capacity.

The second step was taken by Paris, which is recognized as the world leader in terms of the number of interesting places and museums. The lifting of quarantine restrictions in the country led to an increase in the tourist flow. This summer, travelers spent 10% more money in Paris than in 2019. Also, the city hall introduced many programs for the reconstruction of Paris, the authorities plan to reduce the amount of car traffic. Some streets have been completely closed to cars and green zones are being built on them. Paris is also preparing to host the Summer Olympic Games in 2024.

New York took third place, the business center holds the leading position in the "Promotion" category. The population of the city decreased quite a lot due to the coronavirus epidemic, but many residents returned to the city again in 2022. Big shows also returned to New York. Another large green area was added to the usual Central Park - Little Island Park on the banks of the Hudson.

The fourth place is occupied by Tokyo. Despite earthquakes, tsunamis and typhoons, Tokyo has long held the top spot as one of the safest metropolises on the planet, ranking 4th in the Safety category. Despite the pandemic, the Japanese government remains steadfast in its goal of 60 million visitors and $136 billion in tourism revenue by 2030. As part of the program, the international terminal at Haneda, the city's main airport, was expanded in 2022. Tokyo also took first place in the "Shopping" category. The number of shopping centers in the city is growing.

Rounding out the Top 5 is Dubai, an international business and tourist center that combines Arabic classics and modern luxury. Dubai became the first in two categories - "People" and "Place". The number of attractions and entertainment is amazing, the world's most expensive races are held here, the deepest diving pool was built, which is included in the Guinness Book of Records, etc.

Other cities

Other cities of the world were also included in the rating. Marseille, the oldest city in France, has numerous sunny days, an average of 300 per year. Cologne is open for business and pleasure. Smart and practical Oslo took a leading position in the "People" category. Bangkok holds the title of the transportation hub of Southeast Asia. In the "Prosperity" category, Doha was recognized for the highest GDP per capita and low unemployment. Beijing became the leader due to the largest number of headquarters of world corporations located here.
