Citizens of Poland can enter Ukraine without a visa. However, for a long stay on the territory of the state, Poles need to issue a residence permit.

What are the rules for entering Ukraine from Poland? Detailed information about the visa-free rules, the required package of documents and the rules for issuing a residence permit can be found in our material.

It should be noted that over 130 thousand tourists from Poland visited Ukraine in the first half of 2023.

Visa-free entry to Ukraine from Poland

From September 16, 2022, the law "On the establishment of additional legal and social guarantees for citizens of the Republic of Poland staying in the territory of Ukraine" came into effect in Ukraine. It was adopted in response to the Polish law on assistance to citizens of Ukraine in connection with the armed conflict.

According to the new rules, citizens of Poland, as well as their spouses and children (regardless of citizenship) have the right to legally stay on the territory of Ukraine for 18 months. Also, according to the law, Poles can enjoy all the rights and freedoms, just like citizens of Ukraine:

  • to get a job without any additional permits (including scientific-pedagogical and medical workers);
  • conduct business activities on the territory of Ukraine with the same rights as citizens of Ukraine;
  • receive social benefits, including in case of incapacity for work, loss of breadwinner, unemployment, disability, etc.;
  • study for free and receive a scholarship;
  • to receive medical assistance with the same rights as Ukrainians;
  • undergo state registration as a taxpayer and obtain a registration number of the taxpayer's registration card.

List of documents for entry into Ukraine

The main document that allows you to travel to Ukraine is a Polish foreign passport. Do not forget to check the validity of this document before traveling - the passport must be valid for at least 6 months. Make sure that the photo in your passport is up-to-date and allows you to be identified at border controls. This provision especially applies to children.

The ID card does not allow you to cross the Polish-Ukrainian border. Therefore, it is necessary to obtain a foreign passport before the trip.

It is also necessary to take out medical insurance before traveling to Ukraine.

A reliable war risk insurance policy will help you take maximum care of your own safety during your stay in Ukraine during the war.

Entering Ukraine with a child from Poland

Minors must also have a Polish passport. If the child is traveling with one of the parents, then in order to cross the border, it is necessary to have the written, notarized consent of the other parent for the child's trip abroad. If the child will travel with a third person (for example, with a grandparent), it is necessary to issue a power of attorney (notarized) for the time of departure (this document must indicate the period of stay and the country where your child is going).

Citizens of the Republic of Poland have the right to extend the period of their legal stay in Ukraine for more than 18 months, if they have the relevant grounds and supporting documents (admission to a higher education institution, transfer to the next academic year, conclusion of an employment contract (contract), etc.). For this, it is necessary to obtain a residence permit.

Approximate list of documents for obtaining a permit:

  • Passport of a foreign citizen and its notarized copy with a translation into Ukrainian.
  • Grounds for staying in Ukraine (employment contract, study document, etc.).
