Intermodal trains from Ukraine to Poland: what innovation does Ukrzaliznytsia offer?
Cargo owners now have the opportunity to send containers by intermodal trains to the seaport of Gdansk from four Ukrainian cities. Find out how the new service of Ukrzaliznytsia works and how it will affect the railway connection between Ukraine and the EU countries
Ukrzaliznytsia has introduced a new containerized cargo transportation service from Ukraine to the Polish seaport in Gdansk. This is stated on the website of the carrier's press center. From now on, containers can be shipped by intermodal route trains from Kyiv, Odesa, Vinnytsia, and Dnipro.
What is intermodal transportation and why is it needed?
Intermodal transportation involves door-to-door delivery of goods using at least two modes of transport. The main advantage of this type of transportation is that the cargo owner does not need to look for contractors on his own to ensure the delivery of goods from the supplier to the buyer. In other words, intermodal transportation is carried out under the supervision of one organization that directs the actions of all parties and is responsible for the delivery of cargo to its destination within a certain time frame.
Thus, Ukrzaliznytsia, together with the Liski branch of the Transport Service Center, offers a container transportation service that includes a full package of services, including
- provision of containers for cargo and specialized trains;
- services for loading, unloading, warehousing and storage of goods;
- preparation of transport and customs documents, certificates, etc.
"Container shuttle trains will be integrated into the intermodal national network of the Liski CTS, whose terminals are equipped with everything necessary to provide a comprehensive service: fitting and container platforms, containers, cranes, tractors. The route trains will provide an efficient connection to the corridors of the main EU railway network," summarizes Vyacheslav Yeryomin, member of the Board of JSC "Ukrzaliznytsia".

Intermodal transportation to Europe is a way of European integration for Ukrainian railways
As we mentioned earlier, Ukraine has a developed and extensive network of railways, but there are still few international flights in the country. This is primarily due to the difficulty of transitioning Ukrainian railways to European standards. Therefore, even the new service of Ukrzaliznytsia has some limitations.
For example, containerized cargo can be shipped from four cities, but it will be finalized at the border crossings of the tracks. In particular, in Yahodyna, Izov, Mostysk and Chop. At these transportation hubs, the tracks have transitions from 1520 to 1435 mm, which allows for connectivity:
- Yahotyn with the Baltic-Adriatic and North Sea-Baltic main railroad networks;
- Mostyska with the Baltic-Adriatic and Rhine-Danube main railroad networks;
- Chop - with the main Rhine-Danube railway network and the Mediterranean;
- Vadul Siret - with the main Rhine-Danube railway network.
"We continue to integrate Ukrainian railways into the European network. Therefore, we are taking another important step on this path and launching a new convenient full-service container transportation service. As a result, container trains will improve maritime and inland connections and intermodal logistics chains between Ukraine and the EU," said Yevhen Liashchenko, Chairman of the Board of JSC Ukrzaliznytsia.
Thus, intermodal routes will increase the volume of Ukrainian exports of goods and accelerate European integration processes.
We remind you! The peak summer transportation season is always accompanied by increased demand for railway tickets, which creates ideal conditions for fraudsters. They specialize in a variety of frauds aimed at making illegal profits. Read about popular fraud schemes and how not to get caught in our previous article.
