On Monday, March 4, the German railroad drivers' union (GDL) announced a new 35-hour strike, emphasizing that the measure was inevitable, particularly after the recent breakdown of negotiations on wages and working hours. According to DW, they will be joined by Lufthansa's ground workers.

When will the strikes on German railways take place?

According to the head of GDL, Claus Weselsky, the strike will begin on Wednesday evening. However, this is likely to be only the first wave of protests, as he also warned that GDL plans to intensify its activities and will no longer give 48 hours' notice before the strike.

"We are starting the so-called strike wave," he said at a press conference. "After that, the railroad will no longer be a reliable means of transportation," he added.

At the same time, Deutsche Bahn warns on its official website about a strike from 02:00 am on Thursday, March 7 to 13:00 pm on Friday, March 8 for passenger trains. Freight traffic will be suspended from 18:00 on Wednesday, March 6 to 5:00 on Friday, March 8.

As noted, this is the fifth series of strikes by GDL, as the negotiation process has been going on for several months. Deutsche Bahn said that the union broke off the latest round of negotiations last Thursday. 

As a reminder, one of the key demands of the strikers is to reduce the number of working hours from 38 to 35 per week with unchanged pay. However, the railroad considers this to be economically inexpedient and emphasizes that such changes will only exacerbate the existing staff shortage and shortage of personnel.

New Lufthansa strike: when will airports in Germany be closed?

Germany's largest trade union, Ver.di, also made a statement and called on Lufthansa's ground staff to go on strike again on March 7 and 8. It is noted that they are trying to increase pressure on the eve of the next round of negotiations.

Thus, according to the union, airport staff should stop working from 4:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 7 to 7:10 a.m. on Saturday, March 9. This is likely to result in flight delays and cancellations. Previous similar strikes have resulted in seven German airports being blocked. As a result, most Lufthansa passenger flights were canceled, affecting about 100,000 passengers.
