Kyiv's food is diverse, unique, and multicultural. Popular bloggers Anton Ptushkin and Misha Katsurin have already released two parts of a video about the best locations where you can eat delicious food and feel the authentic spirit of the capital.

Visit Ukraine's editorial team has carefully reviewed this guide and created a selection of the best places to eat in Kyiv based on the recommendations of Katsurin and Ptushkin. Stay with us as we tell you about Kyiv's colorful street food, how Yevhen Klopotenko defeated russia, which wanted to occupy our borsch, where the most delicious shawarma is in Kyiv, and where the first President of Ukraine Leonid Kravchuk ate a Kyiv cutlet.

Take something tasty with you to keep you from going crazy and read our review of the most delicious places in the capital!

The best street food locations in Kyiv

This selection begins with Yaroslava, which is rightfully considered one of the culinary symbols of Kyiv. This place is 75 years old, but it hasn't lost its relevance at all. At Yaroslavа you can taste the most delicious pies in the capital!

"Kyivska Perepichka" is another popular street food restaurant that has been operating in the capital for over 40 years. Probably every Kyivite has heard the word “perepichka”, but only a few know its meaning. As restaurateur Misha Katsurin explains, perepichka is a flatbread made from sour dough. At Kyivska Perepichka, these flatbreads are served with sausages, a so-called Ukrainian authentic alternative to hot dogs.

To visit the next location, you need to move to Lisova Street, one of the largest second-hand stores in the capital. A true legend of Kyiv street food, Iraqi chef Hassan, who cooks falafel in a loaf, works here. For only 190 UAH you will get the world's most powerful sandwich weighing over a kilogram! Unfortunately, Hassan's shop was recently destroyed, so he opened a new location at the Platforma art factory.

Don't miss the Sofra chain of restaurants, which serves the best Crimean Tatar pasties. Here you will be able to feel the true taste of the Ukrainian Crimea and get to know this freedom-loving people better.

Our next recommendation is located on Volodymyrskyi Market, the Tandyr restaurant. In this colorful Uzbek place with authentic lamps, unique design and a stretch ceiling in the form of the sky, you can taste the most delicious samsa in the city, which has 64 layers of dough!

If you are in Troyeshchyna, be sure to visit the street food restaurant Mangal Doner. Here you can taste the most delicious spicy tantuni kebab. Although the design here is primitive, the huge queues confirm the incredible taste of Turkish street food.

Let's move on to the Muslim food market. Near the mosque, you can taste the best Syrian shawarma in the whole capital! It is served here every day except Sunday, but the largest number of visitors is from 13 to 16, especially after the Friday Juma prayer. In addition to shawarma, Katsurin also recommends trying falafel, hummus, pilaf, and samsa.

And our last recommendation in the Street Food block is Pie Spot, which serves one of the best pizzas in the capital. It became especially popular during the quarantine when it organized efficient delivery during the lockdown. In addition to traditional pizza, you should also try calzone, a closed pizza, where the dough is always crispy and fried.

Fine Dining establishments in Kyiv

After all the colorful and interesting street food places, we move on to fine dining. Let's start with Mirali in Podil, on the former territory of the Tetra Pak factory. The chef of the restaurant is Mirali Dilbazi, who strives to show his view of Ukrainian seasonal and local products through the prism of his approach to gastronomy. This is not just a restaurant, but a real source of inspiration for chefs. Misha Katsurin called it the best place for breakfast.

The next location is One Tea Tree, where you can taste the best Chinese tea in the capital. The place is decorated with a large number of unique tea tools that you can even buy and take home as a souvenir. Here you will find porcelain and vintage cups from auctions that are several hundred years old. All teas are brought from Chinese farmers, so you can be sure of their quality.

Next, we want to introduce you to the Spelta bakery in Podil, where you can taste the most delicious bread in Kyiv. The place is decorated with historical artifacts, vinyl, and natural wines. Katsurin and Ptushkin's personal recommendation is to try the bread with butter and red caviar.

“100 Years Ago Forward” is an unusual restaurant with traditional Ukrainian cuisine, chefed by Yevhen Klopotenko, who is rightfully considered an ambassador of Ukrainian cuisine. He not only cooks deliciously, but also creates real gastronomic reforms. It was Klopotenko who won the cultural struggle with russia on the gastronomic front and got UNESCO to recognize borsch as an object of intangible cultural heritage of Ukraine.

The next place that is definitely worth your attention is Molodist, a combination of a restaurant, museum, and disco.  It serves delicious and simple home-cooked food, has Coco Jamba and Ice Baby playing all the time, and a real authentic 90s atmosphere. Guests are surrounded by slot machines, hangars, nostalgic inscriptions, game consoles, dishes and other decorative elements that allow them to fully recreate the vibe of the time. Prior to the full-scale invasion, the venue received more than 70,000 guests per month.

Himalaya is an authentic establishment on Velyka Vasylkivka Street that teleports you to the real India! The founders of this wonderful place are from India, the family moved to Kyiv almost 30 years ago. The atmosphere is complemented by handmade jewelry, dishes, interior elements and wood.

Our next recommendation is Catch, the most expensive fish restaurant in the capital. You will definitely be pleasantly surprised by the exquisite interior, perfect serving, marble tables, luxurious chandeliers, floral arrangements and a huge collection of rare champagne. Guests are always treated to fresh seafood.

“Shima” is a laconic and stylish sushi bar that serves incredible dishes from incredible fish: Japanese scallops, chilled amber, Scottish salmon. You should definitely try the nigiri sushi here.

And the last place from the Fine Dining section is Milk Bar, a huge open space with a fantastic terrace overlooking Khreshchatyk, an open kitchen and dozens of tempting treats. The real calling card of the restaurant is the Three Milks dessert, which has sold over a million servings!

Katsurin and Ptushkin's personal recommendations

Misha Katsurin advises everyone to visit the Strumok restaurant, which was designed in the shape of a crown. Although it is located almost 30 km from Kyiv, it is definitely worth your attention. In Strumok, time seems to have stopped, you will find yourself in the preserved era of the 90s. This is where the entire Soviet elite and the first Presidents of Ukraine used to eat. Here you can try a real Kyiv cutlet in the same place where the first President of Ukraine Leonid Kravchuk used to sit.

Ptushkin's personal recommendation is the Kyiv City Dining Room. Here you will feel the real taste of childhood. Anton recommends ordering buckwheat, liver in sour cream sauce, cabbage salad, and jelly.

Of course, the list of these restaurants is not limited to our article, because Kyiv is a city of incredible people, wonderful places, and great cuisine!
